Obituary - Lucille Rayner Goulding

Friday, 08 January 2010 00:00

Lucille Rayner Goulding passed away peacefully in her sleep at home on Dec. 28, 2009 after a three-decades-long battle with Parkinson’s Disease. Born in New York, she lived through the Depression and WWII. She married John Goulding (died 1989) in 1944, upon his return from overseas military service. Together they raised four children on Long Island. She was elected to the Farmingdale Board of Education in 1964, where she served for twelve years, six of them as president, and saw the district through a period of tremendous growth. Subsequently, she returned to New York City, where she worked in university administration at New York University School of Law until her retirement in 1994. She spent the remaining years of her life in Farmingdale, in the house and community she loved.

She is survived by her two daughters-in-law, Jennifer Cattani and Kathleen Goulding, by her son-in-law, James Kelley Nevling, and by her four children, Judy, Christopher, Peter and Susan - to whom she leaves a belief in the importance of an open mind and the value of everyone’s voice, a love of reading and of the pleasures of language, a concern for the well-being of children and animals and a desire for understanding and peace in all our lives. We mourn her death, but we celebrate her full, dignified, and generous life. Arrangements were made by Arthur F. White Funeral Home. Her family received condolences at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, please donate to Parkinson’s research or to a charity that supports children.
