It’s school budget time, and wrath is in the air. Politicians are raging, taxpayers fuming, students protesting. The frustration is easy to understand. School budget votes in our region are a lose-lose proposition. Vote against the budget, and the ones we hurt are the children. Vote in favor, and we perpetuate the ruinous tax spiral that is devastating families and crippling our economy.
I am responding to Mr. Jason Dworkin’s letter to the editor of April 9, 2010 entitled “Comptroller Should Audit Nassau Special Districts” and believe that he has misunderstood my policy towards special districts. Mr. Dworkin indicates that I think it is “unnecessary to audit Nassau’s special districts and that this decision is reckless.”
We support the Farmingdale Fire Department. Those stickers can be seen all over the town. I support and praise the fact that at a moment’s notice they place their lives at risk to keep us safe and alive. I can give firsthand testimony to that fact. Many other people can as well.
Comptroller DiNapoli’s decision to continue investigating special districts on Long Island is prudent and logical. His most recent discovery of the wasteful spending in the Setauket Fire District is a perfect example of why Comptroller Maragos should continue the audits started by former Comptroller Weitzman. So why does Comptroller Maragos think it is unnecessary to audit Nassau’s special districts? I want these audits to be done, so I know that my tax dollars aren’t being spent inappropriately.
The Easter season is here and it could not have come at a better time. There seems to be so much anger among us. I was told angry people would not read this letter; I pray this is not true.
Many LI residents were taken by surprise by last weekend’s storm and had no plan for their pets when they evacuated. This is a wakeup call given the predictions for a more active than normal Hurricane Season. Now is the time to make family evacuation plans including your pet. Most shelters will not accept pets so you must make the plan keeping in mind a companion animal is happiest in a familiar, safe environment. Teach pets to be accustomed to crates, making him a more welcome guest in a friend or relative’s home.
