The Social Service Volunteers of Nassau Inc. is a not-for-profit, charitable organization as defined under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. The volunteers work in partnership with the Nassau County Department of Social Services to provide assistance for families and children, the elderly, and people with disabilities.

From Sustainable Long Island

  Our Food Equity Program

Food plays such an important role in the holiday traditions of so many families. As we come off Thanksgiving and celebrate the start of the holiday season, I think about how more Long Islanders than ever are seeking assistance for basic necessities, including access to food.

Letter: County Clerk Says Thank You

Friday, 27 November 2009 00:00

I would like to thank the wonderful residents of Nassau County for their support on Election Day. I am honored and privileged to have been re-elected to serve as your Nassau County Clerk.

I would also like to thank the many volunteers, colleagues, neighbors and friends who gave so much of their time and efforts in support of my re-election.

We hope everyone has been enjoying the fall weather as the holiday season quickly approaches. We’re doing our part to ‘Be Green’ and conserve wherever possible.  And you can do your part during the winter months.  South Farmingdale Water District offers several suggestions to help promote water conservation and specific green initiatives within our homes and community.

Editorial: Saying Goodbye Is Never Easy

Written by Jaime L. Tomeo Friday, 20 November 2009 00:00

More than five years ago the Farmingdale community welcomed me with open arms as the editor of their local newspaper. I greeted the community with my Sept. 24, 2004 editorial and I must bid farewell in the same manner.

The countless individuals I have met on my journey as editor have helped shape my journalism career. I have truly enjoyed telling your stories and reporting your news.

As I move on, you can rest assured I am leaving the paper in capable hands. Please give my successor, Rachel Shapiro, a warm Daler welcome!

Letter: Protect Nassau County Parks

Friday, 13 November 2009 00:00

As of this writing there has been a major change in the county legislature and the race for the county executive is still in doubt. We feel a key ingredient in these results is the public’s disenchantment with the privatization and misuse of the county park system. Are there other factors at work? Of course, but few issues strike with as much impact as open space, parks and preserves.

Letter: Candidate Extends Thanks, Promises Support

Friday, 13 November 2009 00:00

By going to the polls this past Election Day, our community helped ensure that the American Dream is alive and well. Though I was just four years old when I came to the U.S. from India, after completing my education in science, economics and law, I imagined that one day the skills I acquired would be beneficial to the community, which had provided me with these gifts.

I began my career in public service as an assistant district attorney and my nomination as the Democratic and Working Families Parties candidate for the Nassau County Legislature’s 17th Legislative District was not only a continuation of my personal commitment to serving our community, but it was also the continuation of my American dream.

Letter: Mejias Lauds Those Involved in Master Planning of Village Of Farmingdale

Written by Donna Duffy Friday, 06 November 2009 00:00

Last Tuesday evening the Village of Farmingdale took a big step forward toward a bright future. After years of hard work the village board presented a master plan to revitalize downtown Farmingdale and guide the village into the future.  Mayor Starkie and the village board deserve credit for reaching out and working together with local elected leaders but more importantly, for involving the community on this historic process.

Letter: Regardless of Political Party, Support John Venditto

Friday, 30 October 2009 00:00

As a longtime resident and civic leader in the Town of Oyster Bay, I believe we have been fortunate to have a Town Supervisor who has done a superb job over the last 12 years with his determination and resolve in making the Town of Oyster Bay one of the leading towns in NYS to live.

Letter: Support for Majid

Friday, 23 October 2009 00:00

Keeping an open mind, I attended a debate where Arshad Majid and Rose Walker were vying for the Nassau County Legislature seat for the 17th Legislative District.

Rose Walker was almost an hour late – every question asked of her by the moderator of the debate that she barely managed to answer, was tempered by her allegiance to Mr. Mangano – never by her ability to fill the job. When asked what would happen if Mr. Mangano lost the election, we received no answer. When asked what she would do as a legislator, she hemmed and hawed – and was heavily leaning on her past six years on the Town of Oyster Bay Council record.
