Tipping the scales at a meaty 270 pounds at the tender young age of only 19, powerlifter Matt Sohmer is poised to hit the big-time- literally.
A graduate of Farmingdale High School, Sohmer played on the football team his junior and senior years, where he was a defensive tackle. And while always considered the ‘big kid,’ he said that once he started playing on the gridiron, he discovered that he needed to be even bigger.
Several years ago, Joe Spallina was coaching the Rocky Point Girls Lacrosse team against Farmingdale, led by standout player Janine Hillier. Spallina devised a game plan around stopping the superstar, and was successful in doing so. However, years later, as Spallina leads the Stony Brook Womens Lacrosse Team in a quest for a national title, he is now focusing on taking advantage of the talented player as she now plays for his team rather than his opponent.
The Lady Dalers wll once again be hosting the Long Island Challenge at Farmingdale High School on April 27. The competition will feature some of the top ranked lacrosse teams on Long Island, as well as food and raffles. The first game begins at noon, with the final game featuring Farmingdale’s Lady Dalers taking on Eastport South Manor at 6 p.m.
The Farmingdale HAWKS Youth Football/Cheer Organization held its annual awards luncheon at The Carlyle on The Green at Bethpage State Park. The HAWKS families rallied together, and raised over $1,200 to help The Long Beach Bulldogs Youth Football Organization replace some equipment that was destroyed during Hurricane Sandy. A check was proudly presented to The Long Beach Bulldogs. Seasonal registration for the 2013 Town of Oyster Bay Golf Course has started. Members will have the opportunity to enjoy all of the amenities that the Town of Oyster Bay’s renowned 18-hole par 70-championship golf course has to offer.
Those who join will continue to have the option of purchasing Advanced Tee-Time reservations for tee-times scheduled up to seven days in advance. Tee-Time members will also have the opportunity to schedule tee-off times 30 days in advance.
Farmingdale students participated in the Special Olympics-Long Island Swim competition at the Nassau County Aquatic Center. This was the first meet for the Farmingdale O’Splash team and they are looking forward to participating with the entire team in April. Team O’Splash is supported by Farmingdale Youth Council and Farmingdale SEPTA and provides swim instruction to special needs students.
