Congratulations to veteran Farmingdale runner Colleen Gardner, who scored as the second woman in the 30-35-39 age group in the third race in the RunNassau Series of races leading up to the Long Island Marathon. The race was a 5-mile event at Cedar Creek Park on April 7.
Gardner, 35, raced to a 40-minute, 27-second finish, a pace of 8:05 per mile that got her to the finish line a strong 15 seconds in front of third-place age group award winner Irena Brobston of Oceanside. Jenn Thelian of Hempstead took first place honors in the age group.
The series, conducted by the Greater Long Island Running Club (GLIRC) under the auspices of Nassau County and the Friends of Nassau Recreation, consists of four races. The finale will be at Eisenhower Park on Saturday, April 28.
“This is a great new concept that has been long overdue,” observed Walter Kueffner of the Running Club, who heads up the race committee. “We thank County Executive Ed Mangano and the County Parks Department for cooperating in adding all these new programs leading up to the Long Island Marathon, and we are thrilled that so accomplished a runner as Colleen Gardner Klarfeld was on hand to help us celebrate this great series!”
