With manager Tom Ball attending a wedding in Iowa, it seemed like a tall order when Marc Fischer said, “win this one for T-Ball.” Zwanger Pesiri Radiology (ZP) was after all facing powerful B.K. Sweeney’s, the number one seed in the Over the Hill Gang playoffs. But on Friday night, it didn’t matter. ZP fired out of the gates with 16 runs in the first two innings and then scored just enough to stay ahead in a big 22-15 win. Everyone contributed to this victory.
Pitcher Brian Tinney held a lineup that normally scores 20 plus runs a game to 15. His defense cracked a few times, but made the plays when needed. John Hernandez was solid at shortstop and Fischer at first base made a key stop and throw to nail a runner at second base. In the outfield, Bino Reverberi tracked down a number of drives up against the fence that a lot of guys don’t get to.
Russ Graham and Sean O’Flynn led the offense with a pair of homers. Graham cleared the fence while Sean had to use his “wheels” after smashing one over the left fielders head. O’Flynn’s blast came at a critical time in the eighth inning, just when BK appeared to be inching back and getting some momentum. Ira Berger returned from an injury with a perfect 3-for-3 night.
Jerry Mazza, Hernandez, Graham, O’Flynn and Fischer also pounded three hits each. Vinny Foppiano, Tommy Dittmeier, Reverberi, Tinney and Anthony Nicolich rounded out the attack with two hits each. For the night ZP collected 31 hits and walked away with an impressive win over a very tough team.
