In Paris, it seems there’s a bistro on every corner. Here in central Nassau, Mitchell Sudock and Toni Contino have brought an American bistro to Mitch & Toni’s in Albertson.
Mitch & Toni’s is a handsome place, serving an eclectic palette of well-flavored and beautifully presented food—ranging from American favorites such as burgers and mac and cheese (their version is carbonara-style) as well as off-beat offerings that include farro (a rustic wheat product), fish tacos and a delicious vegan “pasta,” where zucchini stands in for the spaghetti. Toni says that their goal is to appeal to a wide range of tastes while awakening some palettes to new flavors.
We are a small business, they say. “We are the Mitch and Toni and people see us when they come—this is our business and we’re very proud of it,” says Toni. The partners are attuned to the needs of their diners, paying careful attention to allergies and special dietary requests. On the menu are a couple of gluten-free items, such as grilled Atlantic salmon prepared with quinoa, artichokes, zucchini, black olive aioli and pickled onions. Other items that can easily be made gluten-free, such as roasted duck breast, are marked with an asterisk.
Mitch & Toni’s is truly a collaboration of the two partners. Although Mitch is the chef and Toni handles the front of the house (as well as the wine) there’s lots of give-and-take about what will go on the menu and how the restaurant will be run. A new menu item is Plain & Simple where customers can choose to have fish, chicken breast and marinated flat iron steak served grilled, roasted or blackened. Another recent innovation is family-style on Sundays. “As a mother of four children,” says Toni, “I know how costly it can be to come out to dinner.” The portions are large and shareable.
Desserts are definitely in the comfort-food category. Some choices are s’mores, “two very large chocolate chip cookies with a couple of shots of milk,” banana bread and fruit cobbler.
As a family-owned small business, Mitch and Toni see they have a role in contributing to the betterment of the community. They cook for Ronald McDonald House once a month, plus Thanksgiving and Christmas. When they found out that one of their male employees had breast cancer, they decided to create awareness and raise money for the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Program by donating profits from several drinks and a special dessert sold during October Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Mitch and Toni are often asked if they’re married; the answer is yes, but not to each other. They are committed to working together to provide a delicious dining experience for the people who enter their doors.
