Obituaries

Walter Lawlor Jr., 82, formerly of West Hempstead, died recently. Born in NYC he started a stone mason yard in West Hempstead in the 1930s. His companies, Lawlor Stone and Lawlor Paving, installed and supplied the stone in many projects including Battery Park City, the Central Park playground and zoo, the Eleanor Roosevelt Memorial Library, the Massapequa Railroad crossing, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC, the South Street Seaport and the UN Development Corp. Sculpture Garden and buildings at Fordham and Rockefeller Universities, Rutgers, St. Johns and Yale. His company also provided the slate roofs for many homes in Garden City. He was predeceased by his first wife, Audrey Brick. He is survived by his second wife, Jodie; his children, Audrey Kessler, Diana Stalh and Gail Underwood; his brother Michael and sister Ceila Kennedy; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Services private.

Richard Svara, 66, of Franklin Square, died on April 11, 1998. A Korean War Army veteran, he was a retired postal union official. Mr. Svara was a letter carrier and later became president of Postal Workers Union Local 2062 serving employees who worked in the Elmont, Floral Park, Glen Oaks and Queens area. Husband of the late Dorothy. Father of Richard Svara of Brunswick, GA, Kim Van Ausdle of Athens, NY and Jill Kiernan of Franklin Square. Stepfather of Frank Murphy. Brother of Ernest. Grandfather of five. Services at St. Catherine of Sienna RC Church. Interment Calverton National Cemetery.
