Sewanhaka Power Squadron of the United States Power Squadron is offering a safe boating class at the following locations: Oceanside High School, Skillman Avenue in Oceanside on Monday, Oct. 1; Sewanhaka High School, 500 Tulip Avenue in Floral Park on Thursday, Oct. 4; New Hyde Park High School, 500 Leonard Blvd. in New Hyde Park on Thursday, Oct. 4 and Thursday, Nov. 8.; Garden City High School, Merillon Avenue in Garden City on Wednesday, Oct. 10; and Herricks Community Center, Shelter Rock Road in Herricks on Monday, Oct. 15.

The squadron, which has been teaching safe boating since 1953, is offering these seven-week classes at 7:30 p.m. With knowledgeable and dedicated instructors, residents will be able to improve their boating skills for a safer, more enjoyable time on the water.

Topics include boat handling and seamanship, state and local regulations, marlinespike (knots), reading charts, compass, marine radio, aids to navigation and more. Instruction for the course is free however, there is a nominal charge of $25 for navigation and course materials.
