With the probably onset of hostilities in the Middle East, the Floral Park American Legion has reactivated its Family Support Network to assist the families of people in the military service.
According to Post Commander Ron Prokopowicz, "In our local area we estimate that there are about 25 people who are on active duty, some of them Reservists. We want to assist their families and urge them to contact us if they need any assistance."
Ten years ago the Floral Park American Legion had a similar effort during the Gulf War.
Prokopowicz added, "One of the important purposes of the American Legion is to assist veterans and the families of service people in times of peace and war and we want to remind them that we are here for them."
The American Legion plans to make periodic mailings to the local men and women who are on active duty. The Legion is compiling a list of the names and addresses of local residents on active duty. Families are requested to call Past Commander Bill Corbett at 516-775-6849 and leave their name, address, phone number and the name and address of the service person. Each week the Legion will send local news, the Legion Newsletter and Village Items to those in service.
"We appreciate the sacrifices that our servicemen and women and their families are making and we want them to know that they are not alone and we are all proud of them and what they are doing for our country," added Prokopowicz.
The Floral Park American Legion Post is open every Friday night from 8 to 10 p.m. The post phone number is 516-437-1295. Commander Prokopowicz can be reached at 326-0165, 2nd Vice Commander Peter Fleig at 437-5084.
