The following are trustees' reports from the June 3 board meeting.

Trustee Phil Guarnieri reported that the repaving of the Long Island Rail Road parking lot on Caroline Place is ongoing. The asphalt overlay is being finished shortly. And, weather permitting, the parking lot was slated to reopen June 6.

Guarnieri also remarked on the sad passing of Ralph Gode, who served the village with great distinction. He mentioned how active Ralph was in the 1950s through the early 1960s when many of the most important decisions impacting the community were made. As elder statesman, mentor and political sage, Ralph Gode will be greatly missed by himself and many other people, Guarnieri said.

Trustee Kevin Greene thanked residents and businesses for supporting the fire department's subscription drive this past month. The Floral Park Fire Department will be participating in the Fire Training Academy, beginning July 8 and running for six weeks, with one class per week.

Fire Prevention Sunday will be held Sept. 7 in conjunction with Spirit Days. Anyone interested in serving on a committee that weekend may contact village hall. The fire department also recently started a lacrosse team called the Red Devils. They played their first game against Garden City Park, winning 7-6.

Trustee Gerry Bambrick reported the library's annual book sale will be this Saturday, June 14, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Rain date is June 16 and the bargain book night will be held June 16 between 7-9 p.m. A bag of books may be purchased for $2.

Trustee Tom Tweedy reported that pool membership sign-up is at the same place as last year and as of June 1, pool membership sign-up will be open to non-residents. The unusual amount of rain has wreaked havoc on field conditions but the recreation staff has worked diligently to keep them in playable condition.

The dedication of the new recreation/pool building will be held on Saturday, June 14 at 10 a.m. The pool originally opened in 1962 after much hard work by a dedicated committee, including the efforts of John Minogue and members of the West End Civic Association, which brought about this fine community asset. Mayor Ann Corbett will dedicate the new building to all the volunteers of Floral Park who generously give their time to the community. At 11 a.m. the pool will officially open for the season.

Tweedy also spoke of Ralph Gode's passing and how he was such a fine mentor and a dear friend who will be sorely missed.

Mayor Corbett reported that it was a pleasure to attend Floral Park Memorial High School's awards ceremony and extend congratulations on behalf of herself and the board of trustees to the Class of 2003. Mayor Corbett reported that she and the board attended the May 31 Commerce Bank ribbon cutting ceremony. The Commerce Bank generously presented the Floral Park Historical Society with a $1,000 check, to be used for historical materials. She also spoke at the regular Historical Society meeting, which was held in the Nassau Athletic Club building on Plainfield Avenue, taking Society members and others in attendance on a tour of the building and discussed possibilities for the property in the future. She thanked the Department of Public Works for cleaning up the building for the meeting.

Mayor Corbett also reported that on May 22 she held an open house and met with several residents who voiced their concerns on various issues that have been taken up with department heads to be addressed. The mayor also attended Girl Scout Cadette Troop 1577's Silver Award ceremony at Our Lady of Victory School June 2 and was happy to present citations to Silver Award recipients Megan DeHey, Kristine McKiernan, Patricia Quinn and Marybeth Weiss in honor of their fine achievement.
