The following are trustees' reports from the July 15 Floral Park board meeting.

Trustee Phil Guarnieri reported that the Terrace Avenue resurfacing project is underway. Terrace Avenue is one of two arterial roads leading to the recreation/pool building. This work could not commence until the building's parking lot was completed and KeySpan put in the gas main, he explained. Concrete work started the week of July 14 with the replacement of some driveway aprons and curbing. The area along the railroad on the north side of Terrace Avenue east of Plainfield Avenue will be improved with new sidewalk and curbing installed to make it safer for pedestrians to walk there. The raising of manholes and milling of the curb line will be next before the actual asphalt overlay will take place. It is hoped that this project will be completed in about two weeks.

Trustee Guarnieri stated he would like residents to be aware that a new stop sign has been installed in front of the Public Works building. "Please remember to use caution when driving into the pool parking lot. Public Works vehicles are very active in this area so be cognizant," he said.

Trustee Kevin Greene reported that the department responded to 96 alarms, 67 of which were medical emergencies, this past month.

The department also marched in the Stewart Manor Fourth of July parade, led by Chief Robert Kloepfer. The department received "Best Appearing Department in the Line of March" and "Best Musical Unit." The Doodle Bugs won fourth place in the old fashioned tourney. The department participated in eight events and scored in the top five in each one.

Greene also noted that the department is scheduled to attend the Nassau County Fire Academy in Bethpage one night a week for the next six weeks for a department operations program. The program provides firefighters with hands-on training involving real fire simulators such as high-rise fires, single-structure fires, aircraft fires and oil fires.

Greene was pleased to add that eight fire department members are going through the final steps before being certified as Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs).

Greene reported that Spirit Weekend will be held Friday, Sept. 5 through Sunday, Sept. 7. On Friday from 5-11 p.m., there will be amusement rides, music, food and refreshments. Saturday, Spirit Day, will include activities going on from noon-11 p.m. There will be family activities, including a football toss, arts and crafts, a three-leg race, a basketball shooting contest, an obstacle course and more from noon-4 p.m., a beautiful baby contest at 1:30 p.m., amusement rides from 3-11 p.m., Little League awards at 5:30 p.m. and Spirit Awards at 7 p.m. A DJ will provide music from 1-5 p.m. and the New York Connection will perform from 7:30-10:30 p.m. There will be food and refreshments available all day.

There will be smoke house, appliance fire and fire ground simulation demonstrations, instruction on how to use a fire extinguisher and fire prevention exhibits. The Spirit Run will also be held on Sunday morning, including the 2K and 5K races. Flyers are available at the recreation/pool building.

Trustee Tom Tweedy thanked residents for their cooperation during the renovation of the recreation center lot and said residents will have many years of enjoyment at this beautiful new facility. On Friday, July 11, the recreation center hosted its annual dance at the pool. The dance was attended by 145 people who enjoyed a wonderful evening even though there was a quick downpour. Tweedy thanked Assistant Pool Director Barbara Smith for all her hard work in putting the event together.

The pool also celebrated Member Appreciation Day with giveaways, such as Great Adventure passes. D&J Refreshment provided free food samples. Tweedy asks that residents stop by and enjoy the pool athletic games, which have really caught on this year. "The lifeguards are really jumping into this activity by jumping into the pool and directing the activities all day long," he said.

Upcoming events at the pool include family nights, 50's night, teen dance and the Bob McVeigh Swim-A-Thon. The second session for swimming lessons begins July 22 and the recreation staff will be happy to sign up residents at the pool office.

Tweedy also noted that the Bob Regan softball tournament began July 18 and the Artie Hunt baseball tourney began this Thursday, July 24.
