September 11, 2001 brought grief, pain and suffering upon our great nation. When our grief was most profound, we drew upon each other for support. As we did so we grew stronger as individuals and as a nation. We also vowed that we would never forget. Two years later we continue to honor that promise.

We read the newspaper and watch television stories about our troops fighting for freedom. Our support remains strong for the members of the armed forces. We are continuing the fight against terrorism and we are succeeding.

As the two-year anniversary approaches, my thoughts and prayers are especially with all who lost friends and family members. Accordingly, the town is hosting a special memorial ceremony at Town Park Point Lookout.

On a clear morning you can see the city skyline from Point Lookout and this beach has been the source of comfort and healing for many individuals during troubled times. Because so many have sought solace by the waters of the Atlantic, the Town of Hempstead will be hosting a sunrise memoriam for all Long Islanders affected by the tragic event two years ago. Anyone wishing to join us on September 11, 2003 in a meaningful program of observance is welcome to attend.

The service will feature a stunning World Trade Center sand monument created by award winning sculptors. Those in attendance will be invited to write messages on sand dollars and to place these sand dollars at the base of this monument during the service.

September 11, 2001 changed the lives of many Americans. Although our hearts are broken, our resolve is strong. We continue to weave grief and sorrow into mutual comfort and support. We have united in an unprecedented manner and together we will continue to demonstrate to the world that we will not flinch in the face of terrorism.
