Taxi Cab Carrying Teenage Girls Hits Telephone Pole
On Friday, Jan. 19, a taxi cab traveling through Floral Park with two teenage girls as passengers hit a telephone pole on Tulip Avenue, between Lexington and Nassau Streets, splitting the pole into three sections. One section actually came to rest on the underside of the car after it rolled over onto the cab's roof. The Floral Park Fire Department responded along with Floral Park police. No serious injuries were reported and the young girls were transported to the hospital after the arrival of their guardians. LIPA and Verizon were alerted for the repair; some phones in the area were out of service until workers could repair the damage.

Hempstead Town's BZA Denies Flea Market at Belmont Racetrack
The Town of Hempstead's Board of Zoning Appeals (BZA) has denied Carol DeSanto's application for a special exception permit to run a flea market at Belmont Racetrack. The board found that the area proposed for the open-air flea market was zoned residential "B" and that such a use is not permitted in such a zoning district. "The board finds insufficient proof was offered to merit approval for a 'use' variance as required..." the denial read.
