The following are trustee reports from the April 17 Floral Park village board meeting.
Deputy Mayor Kevin Greene congratulated Chief Joe O'Grady for a job well-done as chief of the Floral Park Fire Department and wished new chief, Kevin Kelleher, and his staff a safe year.
Deputy Mayor Greene also noted that during March the village's building department issued eight building permits, seven plumbing permits, 16 electrical permits, four fence permits and 10 miscellaneous permits. Permit activity has been heavy in April and the department is bracing for the busy spring construction season, Deputy Mayor Greene noted. The new permit tracking system is in place and is a "good tool for getting information on a permit from filing through certificate of completion," he added.
The Architectural Review Board was slated to continue the subdivision case for 21 Adams Street, April 25.
Letters will be mailed within the next week to commercial property owners reminding them to clean the outside of their buildings.
Trustee Tom Tweedy reported that on April 15 the village storm drainage system was put to the test because of the nor'easter storm that swept through the area. "However, the drainage system fared very well, even with the record-breaking amount of rain received with no major flooding reported," he said. "The past flooding at the corner of Covert Avenue and Cisney Avenue was almost non-existent due to the efforts of Highway Supervisor Richard Albertson along with Nassau County Department of Public Works cleaning the two drains and clearing the pipelines at that intersection just a few days before the storm."
The Belmont sump where most of the water from the West End drains into had its pump running during the storm. The sump filled to about one-third of its capacity but by Monday morning the sump had been pumped dry.
Trustee James Rhatigan reported that he had the pleasure of attending the roller hockey league awards presentation held at the Recreation Center. This program, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary, has provided another opportunity for our youths to demonstrate their athletic abilities, Trustee Rhatigan said, thanking league president, Rachel Penteck, the coaches and teams on another successful year.
He also congratulated Chief Kevin Kelleher, his assistant chiefs and staff as they begin their terms of leadership in the fire department. Trustee Rhatigan said he knows that they will continue, as they have for years, to give freely of their time and expertise for the benefit of residents and wishes them a safe and uneventful tenure. He also thanked outgoing chief, Joe O'Grady, for his fine service to the department.
"Joe has worked hard and long to maintain the highest standards for the men and women of our fire service," Trustee Rhatigan said, adding that he knows O'Grady will continue to serve the community and his department well.
Trustee Mary-Grace Tomecki said that April is a "wonderful month" to visit the Floral Park Library. The library has begun to issue what is known as date due slips which look similar to a receipt that you receive in a grocery or retail store. Patrons receive one slip that lists all of the items that are checked out as well as the due dates of these items. The purpose of these automated slips is to reduce the various costs associated with the production and use of date due cards.
Further, April is Poetry Month and in this spirit the library is encouraging budding poets of all ages to submit their original poems to the Reference Desk. Be sure to include your name, address and telephone number as all participants will receive a prize and all submissions will be considered for publication in the library's monthly newsletter. Poems are being accepted now so it's not too late to share your ballads, limericks and haikus, to name a few.
The library has begun accepting registrants for the AARP Driver Safety Course being offered Wednesday, May 16, at 10:30 a.m.
Further, children in kindergarten through third grade may register for the Friday, April 27, Mother's Day gift craft at 4 p.m. A special Mother's Day gift craft program will be held for preschool children ages 3-5 Monday, April 30, at 10:30 a.m.
Mary Harkins-Conway, who has completed her five-year term as a member of the Floral Park Library board, will be stepping down. "Mary was involved in the refurbishment of the staff lounge and she took particular interest in seeing that the children's section was well-maintained. As an attorney, Mary offered special skills on the presentation of policy. Mary will be greatly missed," Trustee Tomecki said.
On motion by Trustee Tweedy, seconded by Deputy Mayor Greene and carried unanimously, Mayor Phil Guarnieri recessed the meeting at 9:45 p.m.
