This year the annual parade begins at 10:30 a.m. The route of the parade begins at Stewart Avenue and North Dover Parkway; makes a left down Covert Avenue; a left down Salisbury Avenue; a right down Dover Parkway; a right down Tulip Avenue; a right down Covert Avenue and a final stop in front of the Stewart Manor Fire Department headquarters on Covert Avenue. A barbecue follows in the municipal parking lot next to the firehouse. Please come up and grab some food, drinks, shirts, and win some raffles. There will be games, cotton candy, and music.
There will be a regular meting of the board of library trustees on at 7:30 p.m. at the Garden City Public Library in the small meeting room, lower level.
Danny Green of the San Antonio Spurs will be hosting Team Green Basketball Academy at Floral Park Memorial High School from July 8 to July 11. The camp is open to children of all skill levels ages 5-18. The camp fee is $250 and includes a T-shirt, lunch, drawstring backpack, and contest prizes.

Franklin Hospital’s cancer support group meets in the former coffee shop at North Shore LIJ Franklin Hospital in Valley Stream. (Please note the new location for 2013.) The group regularly meets the first Monday of every month from 2 to 4 p.m. It is open to all cancer survivors, including family members and is ideal for people who need someone to talk to about the illness. Discussions include new medicines and treatments, advice on how to cope and also provides emotional support. The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer program is offering new support groups. There is no cost for any group; however pre-registration is required. Additional groups are formed upon request, including groups for men with breast cancer and family members. All groups meet at Adelphi University School of Social Work in Garden City. •Support group for women newly diagnosed with breast cancer will meet weekly for eight weeks from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

In the world of aviation, signals and coded messages are an important part of how airplanes and air traffic control speak everyday. The Cradle of Aviation Museum has a variety of free family activities. Walk through the eight museum galleries and you’ll walk through over 100 years of aerospace history with 75 planes and space craft and a variety of examples of how pilots navigated and communicated from the early days of flight through the space program. Order Sons of Italy in America is seeking new members to join the America Lodge #2245, Franklin Square, Elmont, West Hempstead, Floral Park, Garden City, Stewart Manor and Malverne. Winthrop University Hospital hosted a presentation on the current Ebola epidemic, at the Garden City Library, on Tuesday, Nov. 11. Sponsored by the village’s Property Owners’ Associations, John F. Collins, president and CEO of Winthrop University Hospital and Dr. Michael Ammazzalorso, Winthrop’s Chief Medical Officer provided an overview of the disease along with an update on Winthrop’s preparedness plan.
Dr. Ammazzalorso began his presentation heeding that despite the waning in the press, the disease is still with us. He provided both historical and current day perspectives regarding the epidemic, advising that Ebola is not a new disease. The medical community has been aware of the disease for at least 40 years. Originating in the Congo, Ebola is a zoonosis a disease which has its reservoir in animals and was known for small sporadic outbreaks associated with people who handled bats and rodents or those who consumed bush meat. The current outbreak originated in West Africa, specifically Sierra Leone, Guinea and Liberia. He noted in Africa that more than 45,000 people have died from the disease.

The recreation and parks department will offer beginner level platform tennis lessons at Community Park’s Platform Courts. This five-week course will offer the basic instruction and will be taught by certified platform instructor Sue Tarzian. Each class will be 1.5 hours in length. The cost of this program is $187.50. Classes began the week of Nov. 5. The following classes will be offered:
Beginners - Wednesdays at 7 p.m.
Advanced Beginners – Thursdays at 10:30 a.m.
This program is for beginners only and participants must be Garden City residents. To register, visit the recreation office at 108 Rockaway Ave.
