By a vote of 1,140 to 829, voters approved the Garden City School District’s $36.5 million bond referendum Oct. 27. Work will now go forward on improvements at all nine of the district’s buildings.

Republican incumbent Kate Murray is seeking re-election to her fourth term as Hempstead Town supervisor. Challenging her this year is Garden City resident and Democratic candidate Kristen McElroy. They are seeking a two-year term as town leader.

Several employers and many of their employees who work at the Garden City Medical Center located at 520 Franklin Avenue are angered over a newly instituted $150 parking permit fee.
Many of these employees shop and grab lunch along 7th Street. But because they now have to pay the village $150 for parking, some say they will no longer dine or shop in the village.
On Nov. 3, residents of the Nassau County’s 8th Legislative District will choose their representative in the Nassau County Legislature for the next two years. Incumbent Vincent Muscarella is being challenged by Gaspare Tumminello.
The district encompasses Franklin Square, Stewart Manor, West Hempstead, Garden City and Garden City South as well as parts of Elmont and Floral Park.

Swipe tests performed inside the St. Paul’s Main Building have revealed high levels of lead dust, forcing village officials to immediately stop any groups interested in touring the former boys school and requiring any village staff that must enter the building to use proper breathing apparatus.
After recently enacting Local Law No. 4, which amends the Garden City village code to establish Residence R-20C corner overlay districts, which affect certain corner lots in Garden City, trustees have defined a corner lot or plot as it applies to these districts: “A lot or plot located at the point of intersection of two or more intersecting streets and having an interior angle at the point of intersection of less than 135 degrees. Any lot or plot abutting a curved street where the interior angle formed by the intersection of lines drawn tangent to the street at the points of intersection of street and lot lines does not exceed 135 degrees shall also be considered a corner lot or plot.”
