Murray Honored At Golf Classic

Malone Mulhall Benefit Game Honors Local Citizens

Hoops tilt set for July 28 at Adelphi University

There is nothing more heartwarming than a group of young citizens doing their part to help the community. On July 15, 2010 Paige Malone, Jaime Malone and Michael Mulhall were on their way to work at Camp ANCHOR (Answering the Needs of Citizens with Handicaps through Organized Recreation), a summer camp for mentally and physically handicapped individuals of all ages, when their daily commute turned into a fatal accident.

A little over two years later after this tragedy, the Malone Mulhall Benefit Game has been established and will take place at the Adelphi University gym on July 28 at 1 p.m. Tickets are priced at $15 for adults and $10 for children 12 and under. All proceeds will be donated to the Jaime and Paige Malone Foundation and the Michael Mulhall University of Scranton Scholarship.

LI Ducks Playoff Tickets On Sale Now

The Long Island Ducks announced on July 19 that individual game tickets for the 2012 Atlantic League Playoffs are now on sale. The Ducks secured their eighth trip to the postseason in franchise history by winning the First Half Liberty Division title on Sunday, July 1.

The Ducks will host games three, four (if necessary) and five (if necessary) of the best-of-five Liberty Division Championship Series. Should they advance, the Ducks will host games three, four (if necessary) and five (if necessary) of the best-of-five Atlantic League Championship Series as well. Promotions for the playoffs will be announced at a later date.

Karatatots Learn Key Elements Of Physical Activity

Karatatot is a combination of exercise and karate in a format specifically designed for children ages 4 and up.  Offered by Charles Water Karate & Fitness in Williston Park, the program offers a fun-filled and nurturing setting where children learn concentration, discipline, respect, as well as an understanding of self defense at their own level.

July 26: Terranova Little Big Band
August 2: Linda Ipanema and the Dixie Cats

Concerts are free and open to Garden City residents and their guests. In the event of bad weather, all shows will move indoors to St. Paul’s Cluett Hall at 295 Stewart Ave.

Garden City High School Baseball Honored By Umpires Association

On June 12, the Nassau County Umpires Association held its annual awards banquet honoring the top baseball programs in Nassau County. The annual award is presented to the school, and their coach, from among the 57 varsity programs in Nassau County and is voted upon by approximately 250 umpires throughout the league.

Recently, Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum was the site of the Islanders’ 12th annual Draft Party. Calling the event festive was an understatement as the old barn had the aura of a carnival right down to the line of kids waiting to use the myriad of bounce houses, the multigenerational families wandering around clad in blue and orange and even a Ferris wheel whose passenger cars were festooned with the team’s logo.

After the Edmonton Oilers took Russian junior right wing phenom Nail Yakupov with the overall first pick, speculation was rampant as to who the Isles would take with the fourth pick. Forty-year-old father and fan, Jeff, hoped his Islanders would go in more for more scoring punch to go along with John Tavares and Matt Moulson.

Women’s Softball

Teams and players are needed for the women’s summer softball league. Games are played weeknights at Community Park at 7:30 p.m. The season runs from July 9 through the middle of August.
