Matthew Colantonio, starting catcher for the Amsterdam Mohawks of the New York State Collegiate Baseball League, won the NYCBL championship for the summer 2009 season.
The Mohawks finished the season with an impressive 36–12 record winning their last 14 games in a row. In their final game, the Mohawks beat the Hornell Dodgers to become NYCBL champions for 2009.
The NYCBL is an invitation only summer baseball league for outstanding baseball players attending colleges throughout the country. There are over 700 teams operating in 70 collegiate baseball leagues throughout the United States and all 50 states are represented. Players live with a host family, are provided with jobs during the day and play baseball five evenings a week. They are also assigned to participate in community activities and become ambassadors for their respective colleges.
The 2009 Amsterdam Mohawks were ranked the 13th best team in the United States by Perfect Game, an organization that evaluates player’s baseball skills and potential.
Colantonio will return to Brown University this fall and begin his junior year, with a double major in economics and history. Ivy league baseball begins its fall baseball season in October.
