Team Hits Nothing But Net

Middle school squad wraps up undefeated season

On Monday, Jan. 13, the Garden City Middle School 8th grade team completed its undefeated 11-0 season with a 61-40 victory against Thompson. Many of the same hoopsters played on last year’s 7th grade team that went undefeated as well. One of the major highlights of the campaign was playing on the high school court Friday, Jan. 10 in a 57-22 victory versus South Woods.

The scores for the 2013-2014 season were as follows:

Garden City 49-South Side 35 (H)

Garden City 57-Westbury 22 (A)

Garden City 45-Weber 15 (H)

Garden City 59-Thompson 34 (A)

Garden City 52-Manhasset 29 (H)

Garden City 55-Locust Valley 25 (A)

Garden City 63-Roslyn 53 (A)

Garden City 44-Great Neck North 31 (H)

Garden City 55-Manhasset 45 (A)

Garden City 57-South Woods 22 (H)

Garden City 61-Thompson 40 (H)

The team’s success can be attributed to a combination of hard work, dedication, teamwork and excellent coaching. This group of boys had a lot of fun while playing hard nosed, up-tempo basketball the way it was meant to be played. Throughout the season, Andrew DeSantis, Kevin McNiff and Matthew Granville drove to the basket with reckless abandon while Ian Gallagher, Matt Sauchelli and Michael Liberopoulos controlled the boards. Sean Leggett, Quinn Heslin and Colin Crean led the midrange shooting attack while Chris Jordan, Michael Handal and Nolan Pappas distributed the rock with pinpoint precision. The defensive effort was spearheaded by Aidan Byrnes, Patrick Leggett and Luke Solferino while Brenda McGuire provided long range shooting until an injury cut his season short. The team was coached by Mike Heedles. In an effort to celebrate a successful season, the team faked out Coach Heedles with what appeared to be the traditional Gatorade cooler bath at the conclusion of the final game. The cooler, actually containing confetti and not Gatorade/water, was indeed dumped on Coach Heedles but assuming liquid was in the cooler, Coach was quick on his feet in avoiding most of the confetti bath. The evening concluded with a pizza party at the Garden City Middle School as the team and coach were recognized for their hard work and effort.

The complete 8th grade complete roster is: Aidan Byrnes, Colin Crean, Andrew DeSantis, Ian Gallagher, Matthew Granville, Michael Handal, Quinn Heslin, Chris Jordan, Patrick Leggett, Sean Leggett, Michael Liberopoulos, Brendan McGuire, Kevin McNiff, Nolan Pappas, Matt Sauchelli, Luke Solferino, Head Coach is Mike Heedles.
