The Glen Cove Cardinals 12 and under baseball team finished the regular season in third place at 7 wins, 1 loss and 1 tie. In the first round of the playoffs they defeated the Hauppauge Playball home team who were seeded sixth by a score of 15-3 and in the second round the team defeated second seed Massapequa, 7-5 to advance to the championship game where they met top seed Hauppauge Yankees. Manager Bruce Testa said, "I told the players they've earned the right to be in this position. The first time we played the Hauppauge Yankees it was the Yanks' night; but this night belonged to Glen Cove." The Cardinals were "visitors" and as Eric Soszka lined a single into centerfield on the first pitch of the game, the Cardinals never looked back. The first inning saw Fred Benyo and Brian Martone single in the first two runs of the game. In the second inning, Dan Rivera was hit by a pitch and Eric Soszka singled to put runners on first and second with nobody out. Bruce Testa bunted up the first baseline for a base hit as the third run scored. Chris Oglesby grounded out to second to drive in the fourth run for a commanding 4-1 lead. In the bottom of the fourth, the Yankees came up with three big runs to knot the score at 4 each. Chris Oglesby led off the fifth with a walk and with 2 outs he scored from third on a wild pitch for the fifth and final run. Great pitching from Fred Benyo and Antony Mateo combined for the victory. John Maccarone had some fine catches at third. "I'm very proud of how the boys played in this game and all year. They are true champions. I would like to thank my coaches John Maccarone, George Hahn and Kevin Monahan for their time and effort; the fans and the Glen Cove Junior Baseball/Softball Association for their support," said manager Bruce Testa.
