Mother mallard calls frantically to her seven ducklings urging them to return to her.

On Friday, June 29, at about 3 p.m., Fred LaMere, a member of the Glen Cove Fire Department, was checking out the Mill Pond in the rear of the firehouse. He was just in time to see the last of what were seven ducklings fall out of the pond into the sluiceway under Charles Street. Mother mallard was frantically quacking and flapping her wings calling for them to return to her. Unfortunately, there was the fact that there was a five-foot wall to contend with and they were only about three weeks old.

Firefighter LaMere talked to dispatcher Bill Gray who paged out for any available personnel to respond to the firehouse for an animal rescue. Fourteen members responded. Ladders were placed into the sluiceway and after considerable chasing, all seven ducklings were reunited with Mother mallard.

The rescuers included J. Ellison, W. Neice, C. Valeo, H. Adorno, J. Kosik, B. Gray, J. Wellenreuther, V. Martinez, R. Leftwich, B. Sujeski, C. Patino, F. LaMere, E. Zimmerman and T. Savage.
