Henrietta Brackley Tuthill, a well-known and well respected member of the Glen Cove community, passed away on Sept. 22, 2002.

The indomitable spirit of this courageous woman to survive and contribute was an inspiration to her family and friends. Multi-talented, she was a ranking National Women's Fencing champion in the 1940s. She was an accomplished pianist and vocalist and tackled everything with an eye to succeed. She survived major cancer surgery in the 1960s and a major stroke in 1982. Nevertheless, within two months, she was back serving on the school board and driving her car. She survived heart surgery in the 1990s, then suffered a second stroke. Again, she recovered and was able to continue her normal routine until recently. She was a person who refused, without complaint, to let physical ailments get her down.

Ms. Tuthill spent her life in service to her community. Organizations and agencies blessed with her time and energy include the Nassau County Council of Girl Scouts, for which she served as president for seven years, the Glen Cove Chamber of Commerce, executive director for 12 years, Glen Cove Board of Education, a 25 year commitment, Nassau County Board of Cooperative Educational Services, 22 years, and the Glen Cove Association for the Mentally Retarded. She was a founding member of that organization and spent 15 years with them.

Ms. Tuthill received numerous awards during her long lifetime of civic and educational service including honorary life membership in the New York State Congress of Parents and Teachers, the George M. Estabrook Award for outstanding community service, the Outstanding Community Service Award from the National Conference of Christians and Jews of Long Island. In Glen Cove, the boardroom at Thayer House is named in her honor.

Ms. Tuthill is survived by Chester, her husband of 55 years, her four children, Paul of Franklin Square, Linda Carroll of Glen Cove, Lori Yastrub of Lake Grove and David of Glen Cove. She also leaves behind three grandchildren, Joseph and Stephanie of Lake Grove and TJ (Timothy Joseph) of Glen Cove. Interment will be in All Faiths Cemetery in Middle Village, Queens.

Cono Burzo of Glen Cove, died on Sept. 10, 2002. Husband of the late Rosa Solferino. Father of Michael, Frank and Rocco Burzo. Brother-in-law of Domenico Solferino. Brother of Antonietta Burzo, Giustina Burzo, Giuseppe Burzo and Rocco Burzo. Also survived by many nieces, nephews, family and friends. Arrangements were made by the Marcus L. Bianconi Funeral Home, Glen Cove. Mass of Christian Burial at the Church of St. Rocco. Entombment Holy Rood Cemetery.

Evelyn S. Finsen, of Glen Head, died on Sept. 16, 2002. Wife of the late Gerald. Mother of Gerald Jr. and Joan Brown. Sister of Marion Kilcoyne and Millicent Houlihan. Grandmother of Sandar Fowler and Gerald II. Arrangements were made by the Whitting Funeral Home, Glen Head. Funeral Mass at St. Boniface Martyr Church. Interment St. Patrick's Cemetery, Old Brookville. Contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society, 41 Cedar Ln. N., Glen Head, NY 11545.

Joseph T. O'Keefe, of Glen Cove, died on Sept. 16, 2002. Husband of Virginia. Father of Elizabeth, Timothy, Mary Bermingham (Gerrold) and Andrew. Grandfather of William, Charles and Thomas. Brother of Dorothy Schultz, James O'Keefe and Peggy Niper. Arrangements were made by the Whitting Funeral Home, Glen Head. Funeral Mass at St. Boniface Martyr Church. Interment private. Contributions can be made to the Parkinson's Disease Foudation, 710 W. 168th St., New York, NY 10032.

Dennis Mangarella, of Huntington Station, died on Sept. 17, 2002. Son of Joseph and Nina Mangarella. Brother of Constance De Felice. Uncle of Greg De Felice (Alysa), John De Felice, Claudine Vanek (Brian) and great-uncle of Alexandra De Felice and Cade Vanek. Arrangements were made by the Whitting Funeral Home, Glen Head. Funeral Mass at St. Boniface Martyr Church. Interment private.

Chrystal Bahnsen, of Sea Cliff, died on Sept. 18, 2002. Mother of Brooke Bahnsen (Deborah) of Lake Worth, FL, and Lesley Merlin (Marc) of Greenwich, CT. Arrangements were made by the Whitting Funeral Home, Glen Head. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Contributions may be made in Chrystal's memory to a charity of your choice.

Pearl Danielsen, of Sea Cliff, formerly of Flushing, died on Sept. 18, 2002. Nee Pearl Stonham of Montreal, Canada. Representing Canada at the 1930 British Empire Games in springboard and platform diving, she was the first Canadian woman to win three gold medals in international aquatic competition. For that achievement and years of teaching and coaching aquatic sports, she was inducted into the Aquatic Hall of Fame of Canada in 1971.

She was most proud of her teaching and coaching which exceeded 55 years at the Montreal YWCA, Brooklyn YWCA and Flushing YWCA. For 25 years, Mrs. Danielsen coached a synchronized swimming team, which included her daughters, Gwynne and Claire, at the Flushing YWCA and taught a weekly ladies synchro group there until she was into her 70's.

Mrs. Danielsen was the beloved wife of John A. Danielsen with whom she enjoyed numerous travels, hiking, camping and canoeing. Loving mother of Gwynne Lennon (Mike) and Claire Darcy (Charles). Grandmother of Michael Lennon, Kathleen Lennon, James Lennon, Craig Darcy, John Lennon and Christine Darcy.

Armando R. Deschamps, MD, of Lattingtown, died on Sept. 19, 2002. He was a well known and loved general surgeon at HIP and North Shore University Hosptials. Husband of Claudia. Father of Robert (Kim), John, Dianne (Chris) Mayes, Michelle, Michael, Andrew and Alex. Grandfather of Ashley. Son of Armando and Elena. Brother of Genaro. Arrangements were made by the McLaughlin Kramer Megiel Funeral Home, Glen Cove. Funeral Mass at St. Patrick's Church. Memorial contributions may be made to the Dr. Armando R. Mario Marino, of Locust Valley, died on Sept. 20, 2002. Son of Yolanda and the late Carlo. Brother of Frank, Sal, Bert and Maria. Also survived by nieces and nephews. Arrangements were made by the Dodge-Thomas Funeral Home, Glen Cove. Mass celebrated at St. Rocco's RC Church. Burial Holy Rood Cemetery.

Jennie Minutoli, 82, of Margate, FL, and Bayville, died suddenly on Sept. 20, 2002. Wife of Al. Mother of Betty Pillari (Vincent), Angie Borruso (Joseph), Grace Notaro (Phil) and Guy (Karen). Sister of Anthony and Alfred. Grandmother of 13. Great-grandmother of 19. Arrangements were made by the Dodge-Thomas Funeral Home, Glen Cove. Guido A. Polcari, of Glen Cove, died on Sept. 20, 2002. Husband of Catherine. Father of John, Katie, Jim and Frank. Grandfather of nine. Lillian Strumpf died on Sept. 20, 2002. Wife of the late Samuel. Mother of Bruce, Burton and Sandie. Also survived by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Arrangements were made by the McLaughlin Kramer Megiel Funeral Home, Glen Cove. Services were held at Mt. Hebron Cemetery, Flushing.

Thomas J. Reilly, of Glen Cove, died on Sept. 22, 2002. Husband of Leslie Reilly (nee Herbig). Father of Thomas Jr., John (Luiza) and Brian. Grandfather of John. Brother of Sr. Mary Giles Reilly, SSND, Joseph and Rosemary Farnan. Arrangements were made by the McLaughlin Kramer Megiel Funeral Home, Glen Cove. Funeral Mass celebrated at St. Patrick's Church.
