The girls continued to pursue their season goal of making it to playoffs by defeating Locust Valley and Cold Spring Harbor in league action. The Vikings swept the Falcons on the road 25-14, 25-1 and 26-24 in the Tuesday match. Meredith Vogenberger had five aces and four kills in the final game and Kim Lerch had seven aces and five kills overall.

On Thursday, Cold Spring Harbor came to take back bragging rights from North Shore, winning the first two games of the five-game match. Part of North Shore's losses can be attributed to the 10 serving errors in the first two games. After game two, Chrissy Gasser told her teammates it was time to start over. And that they did. With Kerry Rigley running the offense, North Shore staged an amazing comeback, winning the next three games 25-14, 25-22, 25-22. Kerry finished the match with 4 aces and 15 assists. Kim had 8 aces and 9 kills and Chrissy, 4 aces and 8 kills. The Vikings improved their record to 2-1 in the league and 4-2 overall.

On Saturday, the Lady Vikings made it to the tourney finals against the host team, Plainedge. Though the Vikings won game one handily with a score of 25-14, ultimately they lost the next two with scores of 22-25 and 13-15. North Shore looks to next Saturday, when they host their own tournament, in order to even the score with Plainedge.

It was a week with mixed results for the girls' tennis team, with one win and two losses. Allyson Gordon won at first singles against Great Neck North Sept. 17, but the final tally for the team was 1-6. Three of the matches went to the third and deciding set. Manhasset had the upper hand Sept. 19, winning 5-2. Allyson again won at first singles and Lesley George and Meg McCormack won at fourth doubles. Finally, at home on Sept. 20 against Herricks, the Vikings found their stride, winning 4-3. Allyson remained undefeated at first singles. The team received help from Keira Sheehan, winning at third singles, Katie Deegan and Danielle Mucciolo at first doubles, and Jill Varriale and Jessie Gonthier at second doubles. This was Katie and Danielle's first win of the year.

North Shore plays away at Clarke on Wednesday and home against Port Washington on Friday. After Port, the season is at the halfway point, so stop by and cheer the team on while you can!

The Vikings season continued with a 4-1 loss to Glen Cove, which ended North Shore's four-game stretch opposite non-league opponents to prepare for their season. Scores notwithstanding, the Vikings played their strongest game of the season and came away confident from their effort. Danny Marra scored the lone goal, giving him four goals on the season up to that point.

The B-3 Conference opener against Plainedge was a full team effort, earning North Shore its first win of the season. Adam Braithwaite assisted on both Viking goals, and Danny Marra scored both. The score was 2-1 and the game-winning goal came with less than five minutes remaining.

A Wednesday game against Friends Academy ended with neither team showing the other mercy, evidenced by the final score, after overtime, of 0-0. North Shore showed what Coach Schultz called a "remarkable fitness level," with the defense consistently making good saves. Viking defenders giving their all were Jen Johansen; Stephanie Gomes, who made a terrific save; Caroline McCormack; Caroline Ogilvy; Kristina Kudlak and Caileen Sheehan. The Vikings came back the next day and, though tired after having played two days in a row, beat Manhasset 2-1. The offense looked solid, with Christina DeSousa scoring the first goal and Stefania Santoli scoring with a free kick. Freshman Meghan Schenkel saved the day many times by stopping shots that would have been certain goals, and the defense shut down Manhasset again and again.

The team played their second game at home against Friends Academy on Wednesday. Friends came out strong, taking a 2-0 lead by the end of the half. North Shore got back into the game in the second half, thanks to a goal by April Mercadante assisted by Rachel McCullough. Samantha Kyrkostas made a great defensive save to keep Friends at two goals. The final score was 2-1, with Friends bringing North Shore's record to 1-1.

The team lost a heart breaker to Cold Spring Harbor on Saturday. The Vikings' first touchdown came off a one-yard run by fullback Ryan Galvin, capping an impressive drive engineered by quarterback William Kunkel. Theo Fleishman, Jeremy Van Der Heiden, Chris Galano and Bobby Lynn led the team with superior blocking and pass receptions. The Vikings defense, led by Zach Collins, Carlos Riano, Andrew Stern, Douglas Chaputian and Eddie Murray, hung tough against the Seahawks. The highlight of the defense was Galano's 25-yard touchdown interception that pulled the Vikings within one score.

The next game will be Friday night, Oct. 4, against Carle Place High School at the Town of North Hempstead field on Denton Avenue. Game time is 7 p.m.
