The Glen Cove varsity football team lost a heartbreaker Saturday at

Clarke High School, 6-0. The Big Red and the Rams of Clarke played scoreless for three and one-half back and forth quarters. Clarke capitalized on a GC fumble moving 40 yards for the game's only score.

The defense led by Darrel Hopkins, Cedric Steed, Jiraj Hampton and John Reed (two QB sacks and a fumble recovery) again played superbly. Clarke had been averaging over 30 points per game until they ran into the hard tackling of the Covers. Defensive backs Kevin Morales and Eric Moser held the Rams' heralded 6'4" wide receiver to only one catch, which he promptly fumbled back to the Big Red.

Offensively the Big Red orchestrated a masterful drive beginning on their own 10 and culminating 13 plays later at the Clarke 10. Mateo Ramos, Eric Martinez and Jiraj Hampton alternated carrying the ball behind the Big red O-line of Zavarro, Beisler, Schneider, Marks and Bautista. Unfortunately the Red Zone jinx struck again as the Covers failed to find the end zone in four tries from there.

This Saturday, the Big Red take on their third playoff-bound team in consecutive weeks. Undefeated Bethpage HS invade Glen Cove averaging 44 points per game. If the mettle of our young Covers wasn't tested over the past two weeks, it will be Saturday. Saturday is also Seniors' Teacher Recognition Day. At halftime of the final home game of the Big Red's season, each senior player will honor a teacher of his choice who has impacted his life. Game time is 2 p.m. Fan support is welcome and encouraged.

The Glen Cove boys JV soccer team completed its season on October 21 with a 2-0 win over Manhassett High School. With this win, the team completed an awesome season, compiling an 11- 1- 2 record.

The team was led on offense by midfielders Mike Moron, Pete Charon, Anthony Carrotta, Daniel Garcia and by forwards Joe Salamone and Gio Arce. Pablo Papasidero, Chris Carroll and Cristian Vargas added crucial goals during the season coming off the bench.

The defense, which allowed only 13 goals for the season, was led by goalie Brian Abbondandolo, sweeper Tom O'Rourke, and by defensemen Max Feigman, Victor Sanchez, Mike Lowell, David Roussine and Mark Galluccio.

Adding valuable minutes off the bench were Billy Nicholas, Lee Liquori, Brian Figueroa, Matt Marck, Frank Grella, Chuck Irvine, Artie Pearsall and Benny Timpano.

Congratulations to the team on an outstanding season.
