The derby is held annually in memory of local fishing legend Billy Blind, who passed away in July, 2000. Blind was the driving force behind the revival of the City of Glen Cove annual Bluefish Derby in 1999 after a seven year absence. All proceeds from the derbies will be dedicated to the improvement of the City of Glen Cove Boat Ramp and the Pryibil Beach fishing pier.
The City of Glen Cove wishes to thank the Bluefish Derby Committee members for their tireless efforts in planning and carrying out the event - Billy Blind, Jr., Margaret Granberg, Bibbet O'Neill, Ed Malloy, Norman McAleney, Frank Pena, Diane Rifino and Angie Ritchie (Billy's mom). Special thanks to Paul Grippo from the Glen Cove Harbor Patrol for his many hours spent manning the weigh-in station.
The event would not have been the resounding success it was without the generous support of the following sponsors: Accent on the Home, Andrew Quasha, physical therapist, Angie Blind Ritchie, Arata's Deli, Bibbet O'Neill, Cantor's Garage, Carol and Roland Crawford, Causeway Bait & Tackle, Charlie's Stationery Store, Charles Hardware of Glen Cove, Clearwater View, Country Club Landscaping, Daniel Gale/MacCrate Real Estate, Dave Losee Sign Co., David and Nancy Dorfman, Duffy's Bait & Tackle, Fairview Service Station, Frank's Auto Body, Frank's Beverage Center, Glen Floors, Glen Cove Anglers Club, Glen Cove Beer Distributor, Glen Cove PBA, Glen Cove Yacht Club, Glen Plaza Mason Supply, Gloria's Beauty Shop, Good Time Charlie's, Graziose Plumbing & Heating, Hair Above Salon, Hempstead Harbor Anglers Club, Joseph Basile Electric, Inc., Joseph M.
