North Shore BOE Talks Safety, SCOPE and Budget
Superintendent Root began the North Shore board meeting on Tuesday, February 25, with a brief report on some safety issues in the district. There has been concern raised about the use of pressure-treated lumber in the retaining walls of the district's playgrounds. The EPA has observed that over time, this product leaks small amounts of arsenic into the ground. Big Red Sports
On Saturday Feb. 15, the Glen Cove Big Red wrestling team participated in the Nassau County Section 8 Qualifying Tournament at Massapequa High School. After a very successful and competitive dual match season, the team was looking forward to displaying their individual efforts. The Big Red did not disappoint as they ended the season with a bang by placing five wrestlers into the county tournament. Freshman Leo Davis took fourth place while competing in the 96 pound weight class. In the 160 pound weight class junior John Sebastiano wrestled all the way to third place by defeating Eye from Massapequa. Glen Cove's strong tradition of heavyweights continued to wrestle with the same great success as they did all season long. Danny Marks won two matches in the 275 pound weight class including a double overtime victory over Gallopini of Massapequa. Marks would make the finals and eventually take second place that day. The Big Red had two outstanding wrestlers in the 215 pound weight class. Junior Anthony "Rhino" Zavaro wrestled tough throughout the day to make it all the way to third place. Team captain senior Brian Myers also competed at the 215 weight level and won all three of his matches that day. A come from behind victory over Burnett from Uniondale in the finals made him the qualifier tournament champion. Other Glen Cove standouts of the day were underclassmen Peter Charon, Emanuel Pagan, Roberto Perez and Nick Montello who all wrestled within one match of qualifying. The Big Red had gallant efforts from freshmen Joey Casale, Willy Lebron, Gabe Tomeselli and junior Mike Kavanaugh. The future for Big Red wrestling is looking extremely positive. The team will only be graduating two seniors, which makes for a powerhouse of a team returning next season. The team had an amazing year and would like to thank everyone who helped to make them a success, especially coaches Kocienda and Kopecky for their endless efforts.
