  • News: AvalonBay and Waterfront Revisited at City Council

    The Glen Cove City Council meeting of Tuesday, July 22 began on a somber note as Mayor Mary Ann Holzkamp asked for a moment of silence from the assemblage to honor the passing of Randy Austin, Dr. Dorothy Reed Granger and Robert Senecal, as well as a moment of remembrance for the 50th anniversary of the signing of the armistice ending the Korean War.   • News: Santa Monica Tragedy Strikes Home

    As difficult as it was to watch television coverage of the horrific scene in Santa Monica, CA, in which a car crashed through a farmers' market, killing nine shoppers and injuring many more, it became acutely more poignant as it unfolded that the fatalities included Kevin McCarthy, 50, a native of Glen Cove and member of a longtime local family and his wife, Diana Gong McCarthy. Family members include Glen Cove Police Chief Timothy Edwards, a cousin of Kevin, who remarked that another cousin, Irene Leahy and family, still reside in the "McCarthy Homestead" on Fairmont. Chief Edward's voice was tinged with sorrow as he pronounced the death "a great loss of a great guy." FULL STORY

  • Sports: Glen Cove Golf Pro Tees Up for Noah

    At 5:30 a.m. on July 22, Glen Cove Golf Pro Howard Robertson was on the back nine at the Glen Cove municipal golf course to begin the fulfillment of his promise to Noah Berry, a seriously ill little boy. In fact, Mr. Robertson was adding to the community-wide support for Noah begun in Glen Cove's Deasy Elementary School by first grade teacher, Dana Spincola. FULL STORY

  • Sports: Carol Froehlig Represents LI in Air Race Classic

    Carol Froehlig of Glen Head, the only woman pilot from Long Island entered in the 28th All Women Air Race Classic, raced with fellow Angel Flight pilot, Laura Lattanzio, of North Andover, MA from June 21 through June 24, placing 25th in a field of 38 planes. The race was flown in Laura's Piper Saratoga. This air race covers more than 2,000 miles in four days. There are eight stops, starting in Pratt, Kansas, and ending with a fly-over at Kitty Hawk to commemorate the 100th anniversary of flight. The race terminated just south of Kitty Hawk in Dare County, NC. FULL STORY
