  • Sports: Glen Cove Cardinals Are Connie Mack Champions

The Glen Cove Cardinals are the 2003 Long Island Connie Mack champions, a first for a team from Glen Cove. They accomplished this by defeating the Long Island Astros 1, a team that consisted of 10 All-County high school baseball players, in a best of three series. The Cardinals swept the series, winning the first game 6 to 1 and the second game 4 to 1 behind the consistent combination of great pitching, great defense and timely and great hitting. The Cardinals are a young team of 15 and 16 year olds and one 17-year-old competing in one of the, if not the toughest, competitive high school/college leagues on Long Island. The other fact is that the Glen Cove Cardinals are a product of the Glen Cove Jr. Baseball and Softball organizations. All of the players have come through the program and now are playing at the top of their game. FULL STORY

  • Sports: Comanchees Win Babe Ruth Championship

Another come-from-behind win put the Comanchees on top of the world in this game. Before a packed house at John Burns Park, Glen Cove Comanchees 5, Long Island Saints 4. With players already at college, hurt and sick, the boys were put to one of their toughest tests in years and came out with flying colors. Only needing one win in the last two games, Antonio T.J. Rodriguez wanted and got the ball. The Comanchees scored first in the bottom of the inning. Robert Tartaro led off with a single, then stole second base. Frank Carrotta double scored Tartaro. Donnie Daniels singled and stole second with runners at second and third. Andre "Dre" Junjulas connected on a shot down the right field line for a clutch double and two RBIs. The Saints kept picking away with a run in the second inning, one in the third and two in the fourth. They took a 4-3 lead. In the bottom of the fourth inning T.J. Rodriguez singled and stole second base. Timmy Robinson sacrificed him to third base. Then Jeff Denlea worked off a wicked curve to hit a shot in the hole between second and third for a key single, tying the game 4 to 4. Rodriguez retired the side in the fifth inning 1-2-3. In the bottom of the fifth, the team went back to basics. Robert Tartaro led off with a single again; with the bunt and run Paul Casale Jr. laid down a beautiful sacrifice bunt down third base. Tartaro took off and went straight to third base. Frank Carrotta then singled him in to give Glen Cove a 5-4 lead. The infield came up big in the sixth inning with three up and three down. Comanchees did not score in their half of the sixth inning. Now to the top of the seventh, Rodriguez dominated the saints 1-2-3, retiring the last 10 batters in a row. T.J. had 12 strikeouts allowing five hits and one walk to pick up his second win of the playoffs. To shut down one of the best hitting teams on Long Island is a great accomplishment. Chuck Albano, his players and his coaches are a class act and credit to this great game. FULL STORY
