  • Sports: North Shore High School Viking Sports

Junior Kristalynn Kempton, North Shore's one-woman swim team, qualified for two events at the state level this year and went on to place in both. She was eighth in New York in the 100 breaststroke and 10th for public school competitors in the freestyle. This is her third trip to the States. Kristalynn has swum as an independent since eighth grade because North Shore has no swim team. She trains year-round with the national team of the Long Island Aquatic Club under Coach Dave Ferris and has medalled at the (USS) Junior Olympics, Senior Metropolitans, Eastern Zones as well as the YMCA New York State Championships. Swimming as a North Shore Viking, she has been All County in at least one event all four years and All Long Island in the 100 breaststroke as a sophomore and junior. This year, she also earned All American consideration for her time in the breaststroke. Kristalynn began swimming at the Glen Cove YMCA Nursery School program and, like so many North Shore young people, swam her way through the district's summer swim program at Tappan Beach. Then-director Barbara Holzkamp recommended that she join a swim team, and swimming has been her passion since. She practices before and after school and still finds time to play the violin and maintain grades that allowed for her induction into the National Honor Society. Her goal is to achieve a national time cut and to swim for a good college team. North Shore teacher Kevin Mercier was her swim meet coach for two years; her mother, Amy Kempton, became her coach this year. FULL STORY
