James C. Pagano, 97, of Glen Cove, died on April 13, 2005. Born in Italy, he moved to the US as a young child. Both his parents died young and Jim was raised in an orphanage in Farmingdale. As a young adult, he moved to Glen Cove, where he ran a plumbing business. He joined the Army and was promoted to staff sergeant, serving in Germany. He returned to Glen Cove and married Mary Becker. His wife died in January 1983. They had one son, James, who died in June 2003. Mr. Pagano was an active member of the Glen Cove Elks Club, Lodge #1458. Survivors are grandsons, Matthew Foreit and Louis Pagano; daughter-in-law Wendy Brooks. Arrangements were made by the Dodge Thomas Funeral Home, Glen Cove. Burial Holy Rood Cemetery.
John J. "Jack" McGowan, of Huntington Station, died on April 19, 2005. He was former president of John McGowan & Sons, Inc., a family business specializing in paving, excavation and drainage serving Old Brookville, Brookville and many municipalities on LI founded by his father in 1928. He retired in 1992 along with his brother Pete. It is now run by his two sons. He served during the Korean War in Japan. He was a member of Local 138 Operating Engineers and a member of Glen Head, Glenwood Landing Little League for many years. He was a licensed standard bred horseman and owner and a member of Glenwood American Legion Post 336. Husband of Patricia. Father of Mary Jane Barth (Jim), Nancy Wild, John (Eileen McMahon) and James (Alison). Grandfather of Jimmy, Jillian, Matthew, Jacqueline, John Andrew, Sara, Carly and Jessica. Daniel A. "Dundee" D'Alessio, 85, of Blissfield, MI, formerly of Glen Cove, died on April 21, 2005 at the VA Hospital in Ann Arbor, MI. He was born on June 7, 1919 in Staten Island, the son of Frank and Marie (Pellegrino) D'Alessio. He was married on Jan. 1, 1948 to Iris Alma Johnston, who preceded him in death in January of 2005. In Michigan, Dan was a member of Blissfield VFW Post #10912. He also enjoyed spending time with his friends at the Bliss-Liewert Senior Center in Blissfield. In New York, Dan worked as a construction laborer. He was a member of the Globe and Anchor Detachment of the Marine Corps League, the Special Police of Glen Cove and the Loyal Order of Moose.
"Dundee" was an accomplished boxer, having been a Golden Gloves champion for all of LI, and captured the Diamond Belt for boxing award in Philadelphia. While in the Marine Corps, he was a member of the All American football and boxing teams. In the Marine Corps during WWII, he was trained in the use of the flame thrower.
Dan will be greatly missed by his daughters, Iris (William) McLoughlin in Adrian, MI, Sandra Barrett of Glen Cove and Denise (Brian) Mallory of Blissfield; grandchildren, Tate, Shannon, Will, Veronica, Cierra, Clare, Johnathan and D'Constantine. Dan also leaves behind sister Vera Pemberton of Glen Cove and brother John D'Alessio of Massapequa. Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by brothers Nick and Tom D'Alessio and sisters Nellie Hanson and Tina Miller.

Justin Raymond Whitting, of Brideport, CT, son of Donald Richard Whitting (deceased) and Pamela Raymond Whitting, died suddenly on April 22, 2005 in Knoxville, TN. Justin was born on March 17, 1976 in Augusta, ME and also lived in Sea Cliff, Boca Raton, FL, South Boston, MA and most recently in Bridgeport. He was a graduate of Fitchburg State College in Massachusetts and worked locally in Starbuck's management. Justin was a true gentle soul and a genuinely kind man who will be terribly missed by family, friends and all who knew him. He is survived by his two sisters, Rebecca of Knoxville and Gretchen of NYC. A memorial service will be held on May 21 at 11 a.m. at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, Sea Cliff. Caroline Kulzer (nee Guga), of Ocala, FL, formerly of Glen Cove, died on April 23, 2005, in her 101st year. Wife of the late Joseph P. Mother of June Merritt and the late Irene Stamatis and Richard. Grandmother of Linda, Cindy, Barbara and James. Also survived by her five great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews. Arrangements were made by the McLaughlin Kramer Megiel Funeral Home, Glen Cove. Mohena H. Butler, 81, died on April 24, 2005 at Berkshire Medical Center. Born in Bayside on Sept. 22, 1923, the daughter of Franklin L. and Mohena Belle Roberts Harris, she attended schools there, was a 1941 graduate of Bayside High School and later was a graduate of secretarial school in Manhattan.
Mrs. Butler was employed as a secretary for various lawyers in New York City and LI and also worked in that position for Pan Am Airlines in NY for many years and Bayside Methodist Church, retiring several years ago. A resident of Bayside for 35 years, she also resided in Glen Cove for 35 years and later Fishkill, NY for 10 years.
While in Lenox, MA, she was a member of the United Methodist Church and prior to that had belonged to the Fishkill United Methodist Church. She was an active and energetic parishioner at each of the churches she was a member of throughout her life, and, along with a friend, started a successful church thrift shop in Sea Cliff, which continues to thrive.
Mrs. Butler is survived by her husband Ralph H., whom she married in Bayside on Aug. 28, 1948; two daughters, Meryl Ann Butler of Prescott, AZ, and Dr. Joyce E. Butler of Great Barrington, MA; grandchildren, C. Angelica Perry of Glen Cove and Michael K. Leary of Great Barrington; son-in-law Richard B. Wilcox of Great Barrington; her aunt Dixie Roberts Baurenfeind of Punta Gorda, FL; seven nieces and nephews; and many friends in all the places that she lived. She was predeceased by her brother Ira Harris in 1995.
A memorial service will be held May 1 at 3 p.m. at the United Methodist Church, Downing Ave., Sea Cliff, with Rev. Constance Pak officiating. Private burial will take place Friday at Raymond Hills Cemetery in Carmel, NY. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to HospiceCare in the Berkshires, 369 South St., Pittsfield, MA 01240 or to the United Methodist Church of Sea Cliff, Lenox or Fishkill, in care of the Roche Funeral Home, 120 Main St., Lenox, MA 01240 which was in charge of the arrangements.
