On Friday June 3, Glen Cove High School's unofficial senior cut day, the head custodian of the high school arrived on campus to discover that sometime during the night, people had vandalized the school with paint and graffiti, and had broken a number of windows, according to a report from Det. Sgt. Tom Fitzpatrick of the Glen Cove Police Department.

Some of the broken windows in the high school cafeteria that were part of vandalism in the school Thursday night.

After contacting the police, the staff and officers went on to find that the Carriage House, which houses the Special Education Department and is located next to the school, was painted pink, a large phallic symbol was painted in the roadway in front of the school, the door locks were glued and the signature "Seniors 05" was painted in several locations around the exterior of the building.

Vandals left their signature in front of the main entrance to the high school.

Further investigation, however, exhibited far more damaging vandalism: at least 10 windows to the cafeteria were broken and entry had been made through them. Inside, tables and chairs were overturned and paint was splashed around the room, according to School Superintendent Dr. Jerry Cicchelli.

Sgt. Fitzpatrick said, "By later that night, three Glen Cove High School seniors had been arrested and charged with burglary, which is a felony, for breaking into the school. They were arraigned in First District Court in Hempstead on Saturday, June 4. By 10:30 a.m. on Monday, June 6, five other Glen Cove H. S. seniors had been arrested by Glen Cove detectives and charged with criminal mischief, a misdemeanor, for their part in damaging the exterior of the building and were given appearance tickets for Glen Cove City Court." Sgt. Fitzpatrick stated that the vandalism was done in two incidents, by two different groups of students, perhaps, he said, 45 minutes apart from each other. "There was the one group that actually broke in, followed by what we believe to be two groups that met at the school and vandalized the outside," he said.

Glen Cove High School Principal Joe Hinton deferred to Dr. Jerry Cicchelli, school superintendent, for a statement. Dr. Cicchelli stated that there are "eight superintendent suspensions planned for the students involved."

However, Dr. Cicchelli also said he found that the most of high school student body was grossly offended by the deeds and were anxious to have the individuals responsible caught and punished.

A couple of the involved students were in school on Monday morning, according to Sgt. Fitzpatrick, when police came to ask them to come to the stationhouse for questioning. They left immediately and were subsequently arrested. All students are currently on school suspension.

Sgt. Fitzpatrick added that this investigation into the burglary and vandalism is still open and ongoing.
