By Coach John Dolecki
This year, Glen Cove baseball had an outstanding season winning its 20th Division Championship, their third in the last four years.
Getting on a run during the playoffs with four difficult wins to get to the county finals for the second year in a row, Big Red would then go to lose to the eventual state champion Clark High School, by 4-3 in the last game.
The Big Red finished with a record of 21-6 for the year. They also had five players bring home individual honors from the Nassau County Coaches Annual All County Dinner. Leading the way was third basemen Tom O'Rourke, selected as MVP of the division along with receiving All County honors. Joining him on the All County team were pitcher Anthony Carrotta and center fielder Anthony Bellock. Winning the conference honors was pitcher Kevin Morales and All Division honors went to Bruce Testa. Tom O'Rourke and Anthony Carrotta were also selected by Newsday for the All Long Island Grand Slam Classic game being played in June at the Ducks Stadium.
The five seniors on this year's team are Bruce Testa, Kevin Morales, John Maccarone, Tom O'Rourke and Anthony Carrotta. They won 62 games over the last four years and with three division championships and two county finalist teams, they will be missed. But, great job and great baseball career for Big Red.
Also, great season to the 12 players coming back for next year.
Congratulations to Garret Landry, Eddie Cruz, Jay Choe, Artie Pearsall,
Corey Land, Gabe Ermmarino, Miles Landron, Anthony Bellock, Kurt Cornelius, Michael Durso, Steven Kornreich and Taliek Vasquez on your championship. The boys of spring will be back next year.
The season ended for the Glen Cove Softball team, when it lost its quarter final game against, the number two seed, Seaford High School 3-1. The team finished in 7th place in Conference 1A and was awarded six Nassau County Girls Softball Coaches Association Awards.
The team attended the Nassau County Awards Dinner on Monday June 6th where Christina Abbondandolo was awarded the Nassau County Scholar-Athlete Award, Sara Graziosi was selected for the All-Division Award, Kelly DeAngelis and Kim Kessel were selected for the All-Conference Award, and Aja Alter and Jamie Downer were selected for the All-County Awards. It was a fantastic night for everyone.
The great year the team had would not have been possible with out the support of all the other players and coaches. Rebecca Golloub, Vanessa Garcia, Kristine Mariana, Estefany Andino-Mendez, Desirae O'Neill, Nina Jimenez, Bianca Pisano, Coach Crocco-Longobucco, Coach Geraghty, and Coach Johanson.
Thank you to all of the parents and friends who have supported us all year and we are looking forward to a great season next year.
