GC BOE Offers Alternative High School for At-Risk Students
The Glen Cove Board of Education met on Monday, Aug. 22 and introduced the district's plan for an alternative high school, called "a brainchild" of School Superintendent Dr. Larry Aronstein by board president Richard Tortorici. The school-within-a-school is designed to meet the needs of students who have demonstrated difficulty succeeding in a traditional school program and have disengaged themselves from the standard school experience.

Gold Coast Library Election to Be Held September 8
Budget and Candidate Forum Sept. 7; Four Candidates Vie for Three Seats --
The Gold Coast Public Library Board of Trustees will host, at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 7, an informal session to afford interested residents to meet and question candidates for trustee positions as well as discuss with the board the proposed budget for the 2006 calendar year. The address for the meeting is the recently opened library at 50 Railroad Avenue, Glen Head, opposite the LIRR platform. A regular monthly board meeting will follow, and the public is invited.

Boys & Girls Club Fall Lacrosse Program
North Shore Boys & Girls Club is planning a fall program for its already well-received Lacrosse Developmental Clinic for first and second grade boys and girls. The fall clinic will now include third graders, to prepare them for the spring lacrosse programs. This clinic is an outside field program. The location will continue to be the rear fields, located behind the Boys & Girls Club.

Elizabeth Goldson Qualifies for The 2008 Olympic Trials
Current New York State Swim Champion Elizabeth Goldson has qualified for the 2008 Olympic Trials in two events. Elizabeth, who's going into her senior year at Glen Cove High School, beat her previous best time in the 800 meter free at the U.S. Junior National Championships in Irvine, California by over 16 seconds. The time cut for the 2008 Summer Olympic Trials is 8:50:49. Elizabeth's time of 8:43:70 was good for a silver medal and places her in the top 50 in the world and 11th in United States.
