Opinion

For the future, when citizens write letters to the editor about the proposed waterfront, I would suggest they include their affiliation. For example, if they are business owners who stand to profit from the development, union leaders or family members who are present or future employees of the developer, this should be noted by the writer. I am a senior citizen on a fixed income who is worried that the project will only increase my tax burden. I say this because while the developer continues to say that there will be tax benefits to me and the other tax paying citizens of this city, there has been no analysis to date by independent sources concerning tax benefits, if any, to us.

It is worth noting that the designated open space sections of the project "accessible and valuable to all of the people of Glen Cove" are located on the most polluted locations on the Li Tungsten Superfund Site Parcel A. According to the EPA (Federal Environmental Protection Agency), both in public meetings and documents, Parcel A (Li Tungsten) is still under review and is not (as some City of Glen Cove officials have incorrectly reported), "all cleaned up." The EPA has not said whether this parcel is suitable for residential development and has stated that this area might be a spot for further remediation. This location is presently where the radioactive slag is being stored. Is this where you would like to bring your children and grandchildren? It might be accessible but would you call this valuable?

Concerning questions about the height of the buildings themselves and if the buildings would be in anyone's sight lines, look again, previous writer; the view of those monstrous buildings will be in my sight lines every day for the rest of my life.
