Elizabeth Kals Reilley
|
(This obituary was written by Ellyn Trautmann Pflug)
Elizabeth Kals Reilley died on March 29, 2007 after a prolonged illness. She was born in Vienna, Austria on Sept. 8, 1907. She was educated by governesses until she studied painting in Paris at Ecole des Beaux Arts and later at the University of Vienna - all the while pursuing a successful career as an amateur jockey. She left Austria in 1939 because had been helping friends flee the Nazis and as she put it "was invited to leave."
She moved to New York where during the war she served as librarian for a metallurgical plant and as a freelance photographer. She later became a researcher and reporter for Time magazine where she interviewed Eisenhower on his return from Europe and attended the UN meeting that created the State of Israel. Later she switched to Fortune magazine where she observed early experiments at the company that was to become Xerox.
In 1951, she bought the 200-year-old farmhouse in Muttontown where she lived until her death. It was here, between breeding standard poodles for show, and riding the hunt, that she began her life-long interest in garden design and where she, her gardeners, Jimmy Jarman and Walter Queren, and the birds created a lovely and charming garden that blooms every month of the year.
She earned her library science degree from C.W. Post in 1963 after having taken several graduate courses at Yale University in architecture and garden design. During this time she started building an outstanding private collection of rare garden books and prints, which she later donated to the N.Y. Botanical Garden in 2002. Over the years she had been a trustee of the Horticultural Society in New York, a member of the Garden History Society in London and of the Congress of International Bibliophiles in Paris. In 1977 she became one of the first women admitted to the Grolier Club where, from time to time, she exhibited books from her collection.
In 1967 Elizabeth married Ewing Reilley, a co-founder of McKinsey & Co. It was then too that she accepted the task of organizing a collection of donated horticultural books and started The Garden Library at Planting Fields where she remained on the board of trustees and librarian until her retirement in 2001 at the age of 93. During her tenure, she reviewed books for the library's newsletter and acted as its in-house lecturer. She arranged for her successor, Rosemarie Papayanopulos, to continue the tradition by sending her through the C.W. Post Master's librarian program. Today the Garden Library has close to 8,50 volumes and periodicals and is open to the public for browsing and reference information. In the fall of 2006, there was a grand re-opening of the renovated library. On her 99th birthday, she was honored by having the newly decorated reading room there named in her honor (The Elizabeth Reilley Reading Room).
Elizabeth was also founder of the Post Library Association and remained on its board as a trustee for many years. The purpose of the PLA is devoted to planning many cultural and educational functions for the C.W. Post Campus Library. In 1989 Elizabeth received C.W. Post's Distinguished Alumni Award. She also created the Elizabeth K. Reilley Scholarship at the Palmer Graduate School of Library and Information Science there.
As well as being a member of numerous horticultural societies, Elizabeth Reilley was a member of the Grolier Club, Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club, the Cosmopolitan Club and the Yale Club in New York City. She is survived by two nieces, Maria Kals Opie and Karen Kals Ezekiel, as well as grand-niece Jane Opie Maltan and great-grand-nephew Andreas Maltan.
