The North Shore varsity football team trounced Carle Place High School by a score of 35-7 on Homecoming last Saturday. Craig DeMeo opened the scoring with a nine-yard plunge into the endzone. From that point on, the Vikings' offense was unstoppable. Bobby Magnuson connected with Ian Hnatov for a 7-yard touchdown pass to bring the score to 14-0. To open the second half, Magnuson connected with Taylor McGrath who then sprinted 41 yards for a touchdown. Later in the third quarter Magnuson took a fumbled snap and rushed around the outside of the Frog's defensive line and dove into the endzone. The Vikings still weren't done. Offensive lineman Peter Volpe lined up in the backfield and took the handoff and barreled through the line for the final score. Joe Denovellis led the defense with seven tackles and Matt Meade had a fumble recovery after Tom Kilderry stripped the ball to seal the victory. Robert Grabher was a perfect 5 for 5 for kicking extra points.

The week began with North Shore tied for first in their conference and it ended the same way. On Monday, the Vikings faced Levittown-Division and dominated the game with a four-goal offense and a shutout defense. Four different players scored goals. Robbie Grabher had the first followed by Chris Dellavecchia, Andrew Lazarow and Kyle Henry. A tandem in goal of Tucker Morgan and Brian Leigh combined for the third shutout of the season. The third goal came from a beautiful combination between Alex Bouganim, Alex Lieberman-Cribbins and Kyle Henry.

On Wednesday, Carle Place came to visit and left with no points for their effort in a 4-2 loss. Again the Viking offense dominated play and four different players contributed with goals. This time Andrew Lazarow opened the scoring followed by Keith Salerno, Robbie Grabher (who now leads the team with eight tallies) and Chris Frey. The defense gave up two goals and for the first time this season looked less than invincible but remained unbeaten nevertheless.

The final game of the week was a clash of the two first-place teams vying for sole possession at the top of the league. Roosevelt visited with fresh legs after having a bye date on Wednesday and as the game began it was evident that North Shore was tired. Roosevelt quickly jumped out to an early lead at ten minutes and added another before the fans were settled in. When they added a third, it seemed that it would be a rout for sure. However, just seconds before halftime, Chris Frey put the Vikings back into the game with a timely goal on a beautiful through pass from Matt Kelly. With renewed energy, the Vikings started the second half with grit and determination and six minutes in, Anthony Mendes-Cortes found the ball in a scramble of bodies in front of the net and fired it home to bring the game to within a goal. The fans were back in the game and momentum had switched to North Shore. As the pressure mounted it was inevitable that they would score again and at 55 minutes Eduardo Ramirez, on a pass from Keith Salerno, put a shot in the corner just out of the reach of a diving goaltender. It seemed as though the game would end in a tie but with time winding down, Roosevelt was awarded a penalty shot on a foul within the box. The shot was scored and with time ticking away North Shore continued to press for the tie but came up just short. It was a hard-fought game with a disappointing ending but it showed the true character of a championship-bound Viking team that came from behind and never gave up to the end.

The North Shore women's cross-country team traveled all the way to the Warwick Valley Mania Cross-Country Invitational. More than 45 schools from three states competed in the 5k competition. The North Shore team did not disappoint, finishing a solid fifth out of the entire field. Starting things off in the junior varsity race was freshman sensation Danielle Muoio who stunned the crowd by leading for over 2.5 miles of the hilly terrain, finishing an amazing second place out of approximately 150 runners. She has proven herself as a major asset and emerging superstar in Nassau County. Another great performance in the very same race was run by sophomore Claire Simmons who took off more than two minutes from her personal best. In the varsity race it was a day of personal bests, as the girls surprised everyone except their coach by running personal best times galore. They easily defeated the powerhouses Garden City and Mepham, and showed that they are the team to beat in the county championship. Personal bests were set by sophomore Charlotte Manogue, sophomore Heather Magnuson, and junior Marisa Dussel. Overall the North Shore women's cross-country team is ranked in the top five in NY State for Class "B" schools.

This past week was a grueling one for the Lady Vikings. With four matches in five days, North Shore needed to be sharp and focused all week long.

Unfortunately the team came out flat against Cold Spring Harbor, losing 2-5. North Shore regrouped for their match against Herricks only to fall 1-6. The stronger team prevailed even though the Lady Vikings put up a strong fight. On Wednesday, the team traveled to Manhasset and lost a heartbreaker 2-5. Ari Crane lost in an epic two-hour three setter. Bright spots for the first three matches of the week have been the play of Liz Sabbatini and Rachel Weisman at fourth doubles. As a team, they have learned to volley and play smart tennis. Shelby Talcott continues to dominate her opponents at first singles running her record to 6-0. On Friday, Great Neck North visited North Shore. The team was amped and ready to play, as it was the Homecoming match. The team came out on fire and won 6-1. Amanda Horowitz and Ariel Felix won for the first time this year at first doubles as did Lindsay Padover and Marissa Moshell at third doubles. As the team enters the second half of the season, they hope to improve on their 2-5 record.

The North Shore boys cross-country team defeated Manhasset and Wheatley in their second meet of the season. With only one loss so far, the Vikings won by taking first with Willie Schefer and then flooding the finish with the fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth runners. Mike Clausen, Jake Tobol, Alex Talamo, and Matt Wefer finished off the top five.

On Saturday North Shore traveled to Warwick, NY to run against some of the best teams in New York State. Running in the varsity Class I race, Willie Schefer finished ninth, beating all the competition from Nassau County. Mike Clausen also ran a terrific race finishing as the fourth sophomore overall. Matt Wefer also placed well to help North Shore finish ninth as a team among 16. Kohe Brooks Burke finished as the Vikings' sixth man in his first big meet appearance.

The North Shore women's soccer team was very busy this week. They lost the first game on Monday against Lynbrook 2-1. Everyone played well and the team, on a whole, had 17 shots at goal, but was unlucky not to score. Justyne Passarelli was outstanding in goal, saving shot after shot. The second game was against the Conference leaders, Division High School. North Shore came out very strong, playing attack soccer but the first goal came against the run of play by scoring on themselves. Division High School only scored one goal in the first half, then North Shore's defense tightened up, preventing them from scoring anymore. Erin Tornatore, Madison Martinez, Devon Comito and Maggie Drowica were outstanding. North Shore offense was attacking with Lauren Beyer, Amanda Sobhy, Christina Convey, Alex Welch, Lauren Berglin, Sam Grabher and Laura Cvikevich moving the ball all around, from the left side to the middle to the right side. The Vikings were not getting enough shots at goal. North Shore had a setback when Christina Convey was hit with the ball and suffered a concussion. Alexa Kianofsky came in and played very well in place of Christina.

On Saturday, Sept 29, Homecoming weekend, the Vikings played against Lawrence. North Shore came out very strong and by the end of the first half had scored four goals by four different players: Lauren Berglin, Laura Cvikevich, Sam Grabher and Lauren Beyer. Lauren Beyer and Alex Welch scored two more goals in the second half to make the score 6-1. North Shore raised their game to another level with Justyne Passrelli stopping every shot that Lawrence threw at her. Sarah Baum played very well at the sweeper position.
