The North Shore women's cross-country team had its finest performance of the season this past weekend at the St. Anthony's Invitational at Sunken Meadow Park. The Lady Vikings placed fifth out of the 45-team field. There were several top flight performers at the competition, but none better than sophomore Brianna Welch who ran the fastest time of the day out of approximately 200 runners. This was her best performance so far this season. Other outstanding performances were run by junior Kasia Staniaszek and sophomores Charlotte Manogue and Heather Magnuson. The team would not be complete without the efforts of juniors Thea Lange and Marisa Dussel, who also ran in fine fashion. Overall the team is the #1 ranked school in Nassau County (54 schools) and #1 on Long Island for Class "B" schools.

The North Shore football team lost a heartbreaker, 15-14, against East Rockaway High School. The Rocks took an early lead but the Vikings fought right back and drove the field, culminating with Bobby Magnuson throwing a strike to Mike Lennon. Robert Grabher split the uprights to tie the game. The Vikings then took the lead when sophomore running back Louie Masteleone sprinted 10 yards toward the end zone. Grabher once again split the uprights. The Vikings fought hard defensively but let up a late score and couldn't stop the two-point conversion.

This was another exciting and successful week of soccer for the Vikings. It started with a 4-1 win in a non-league contest against Manhasset. Eduardo Ramirez led the team with two goals and an assist, with Zach Venditto and Keith Salerno each adding another tally. Brian Leigh started his first game in goal and played skillfully, allowing only one goal for Manhasset.

The second game of the week was with Clarke and it marked the end of the first half of the season. It was a closely contested game with both teams having numerous scoring chances, but in the end Tucker Morgan shut the door in goal, posting his fifth shutout while Chris Frey scored the game winner at 34 minutes on a well-placed pass from Eduardo Ramirez.

The final game of the week was against Sewanhaka and it held special meaning, not only for the team, but for Coach Bernie Hintz as well. After 36 years of coaching soccer, Hintz needed one more win to reach 300 games won. In big games, the big players come to play and so it was for North Shore. Robbie Grabher had two goals and two assists to lead the team to a 4-0 win. The game was never in doubt as the first goal was scored by Grabher at 14 minutes and he then set up Jon Pavlica one minute later to put the team up by two and into the permanent lead. Tucker Morgan was solid again in goal and posted his sixth shutout while Chris Frey and Robbie Grabher each scored one more in the second half to help secure the win. The fans and the team were jubilant and appreciative in congratulating Hintz on his career benchmark. The points gained this week move North Shore into second place by three points and just two points out of first. It makes the Vikings record 5-1-1 in the league and 8-1-1 overall, placing them in a position where both a conference championship and a playoff spot are looking good.

North Shore women's soccer had three games to play this past week. The first was against Hewlett High School and North Shore's first goal was disallowed by the referee. Justyne Passarelli was brilliant in goal, stopping every attack from Hewlett, moving out to stop any breakaway. Once she came out and dove at a player's feet, taking the ball and colliding with the player. Justyne came out of the game, but she went back in to continue saving shot after shot. Erin Tornatore was relentless in defense, with Devon Comito, Sarah Baum, Jessica Pickering and Maggie Drowica. The midfield of Lauren Beyer, Lauren Berglin, Christina Convey, Amanda Sobhy and Alexa Kianofsky were outstanding. Forwards Alex Welch, Laura Cvikevich, Sam Grabher and Jen Melgar were attacking from all sides. This was one of North Shore's best games, which ended in a 0-0 draw.

The second game was against Lynbrook who had beaten North Shore at home, so the team was very focused on this game. Everyone played exceptionally; the defense, midfield and forwards were working like a well-oiled machine. They had 15 shots on goal. Lauren Beyer scored the winning goal with the assist by Christina Convey, bringing the final score to North Shore 1, Lynbrook 0. This was truly a team effort. Justyne Passarelli had 14 saves in the game.

The third game was against Lawrence on Saturday. North Shore continued where they left off, playing as a team. North Shore's JV Denise Kildery scored with a hard right foot shot 25 yards out. Lawrence did not give up and scored a goal. JV's Erin Breen, Denise Kildery, and Lauren Broker, along with Sarah Baum, Jen Melgar, Jessica Pickering, Lauren Berglin, Sam Grabher, Lauren Beyer, Alex Welch and Alexa Kianofsky, who scored the winning goal, all played tough and hard. Madison Martinez, who played brilliantly at the sweeper position, along with Maggie Drowica playing in front, stopped every attack that Lawrence threw. Madison Martinez stopped a last-gasp attack by a Lawrence player with a beautiful tackle. Justyne Passarelli was having a great day with 15 saves and total saves of 44 for the week.
