The varsity cheerleaders have gotten the season started with a bang! Leading the way are captains Nicole Loria and Amanda Czerniawski. They are very excited and looking forward to entertaining the Glen Cove football fans with new cheers and dances. The cheerleaders are expecting to follow last year's lead and enter cheer competitions coming up in the winter months. Homecoming and pep rally are the next big events for which they have been practicing enthusiastically. The team has also been working with the professional cheer coach at Hofstra University in order to improve their stunt work and choreography, and will be doing so throughout the season. Coaches Tricia Oliveras and Joanna Defelice are very proud and are anticipating a great year for the team. Go Big Red!

The Glen Cove girls tennis team is halfway through its season with an exciting 6-2 record. There are still some strong teams to conquer, but the girls are psyched to do their best. Teams to beat include Oyster Bay, East Meadow, Hicksville, and Farmingdale. Homecoming and all its festivities are right around the corner, so it has been very important to stay focused.

The two eighth-graders at first and second singles, Megan Pemberton and Alexandra Gerin, continue to improve and each won five of nine matches. Senior Sara Graziosi, at third singles and with a similar record, helps to mentor the girls.

The doubles teams are strong and competitive. First doubles, Jennifer Lee and Danielle Silas, are undefeated and hope to keep the level of play very high. Second doubles Amanda Johnson and Reena Walia have had a strong season as well. Most matches come down to third and fourth doubles to determine the winner of the match. Mili Patel and Christina Zanini, and Heidi Sloane and Catherine Voegtlen certainly have had their hands full with pressured challenges.

On Saturday, Oct. 13, Megan and Alexandra will compete at the Tennis County Meet held at Oceanside High School. There will be close to 130 girls competing on that day. The county tournament is a single elimination tournament and so the girls will have to get a good start to be successful. A singles or doubles player who makes it to the fourth round of competition is considered All-County. It will be a big day for these pint-sized players. The staff wishes them the very best.

Good luck to all the girls for the remainder of the season. Currently in second place, Glen Cove has a chance to be in the playoffs. Congratulations go to all the girls for a great season.

The Glen Cove boy's junior varsity soccer team took a step in the right direction on Oct. 4. The boys team faced off against Great Neck North (5 wins 1 loss), who had beaten them 9-0 in their first meeting. Big Red got things going when starting center midfielder Kieran Basra scored his second goal of the season to put Glen Cove on top 1-0. Ten minutes before the half, Great Neck North tied the score at 1-1 and then scored on a beautiful header off of a corner kick, bringing a 2-1 lead into the second half. Glen Cove continued to scrap, and after going down 3-1, freshman Vincent DiPaola, (on loan from the varsity team) converted a penalty kick in the 64th minute. Unfortunately, this was as close as Glen Cove would get as they lost 4-2.

Despite the loss, the boys have gained confidence and momentum. Sophomore goalkeeper Tom Manzione was stellar making fourteen saves. Kieran Basra and Andrew Mazzeo solidified the midfield by hustling throughout the game, and possessing and distributing the ball. Glen Cove's forwards Chris Gallo and Kevin Nicholas were often on the receiving end of these passes and they were working great together and causing havoc for Great Neck's defenders. Mike Mienko was superb at sweeper as he utilized not only his speed and skills to stop Great Neck's forwards, but also his voice to make sure the defense was marked at all times. Mienko's leadership helped the stopper, Alexi Bogdanich, to play his best game of the season. Bogdanoich played his position well and showed tremendous improvement.

Glen Cove's next home game is Tuesday, Oct. 9. The team encourages friends, family, and Glen Cove supporters to come down and cheer them on.

The Glen Cove JV girls soccer team is finishing the first half of their season with a 3-1-1 record. Goalie Ashley Conklin has been a tremendous part of this team with 42 saves.
