The North Shore High School football coaching staff is proud to announce that several North Shore players were honored throughout Nassau County. Taylor McGrath was named to the All-County and Academic All-Conference Team. He was also honored by the National Football Foundation as a Golden 11 player in Nassau. The Golden 11 is awarded to the 11 top scholar athletes in the county. Peter Volpe was also honored as a National Football Foundation Scholar Athlete. Both players will have their names enshrined in the College Football Hall of Fame. Volpe also won the North Shore Unsung Hero award presented by the Long Island Association of Football Officials. He was also selected to play in the Long Island Exceptional Senior Game. Junior Joe Denovellis was selected to the 2007 All-County Honorable Mention Team by the Nassau County Coaches Association. At the Annual North Shore Football Dinner several athletes were presented with Player of the Week awards. They were Peter Volpe, Craig DeMeo, Steve Cottel, Keith Lopez, Louie Mastellone, Joe Denovellis, Bobby Magnuson, Taylor McGrath, Mike Lennon, and Tom Kilderry. Congratulations to all!

The North Shore Lady Vikings basketball team is off to a 2-0 start in conference play after victories over Lynbrook and Wheatley. In the conference opener, North Shore hosted the Lynbrook Owls. The North Shore offense started slowly, only scoring six points in the first quarter as they found themselves down 9-6. In the second quarter, however, the Lady Vikings started to heat up as they took a 19-16 halftime lead and never looked back en route to a 45-38 victory. The offense was led by Kristen Reynolds' 29 points (10-14 on free throws in the fourth quarter), but it was the team defense of the Lady Vikings that held Lynbrook to under 40 points.

The Lady Vikings next traveled to Wheatley for a tough conference match-up. The offense clicked early and often, with three players scoring double figures. Led by Kristen Reynolds (23 points), Devon Comito (10 points) and Kristin McCormack (10 points), the Vikings cruised to a 61-51 victory. The next home game for the Lady Vikings is Friday, Jan. 18 at 6:30 p.m.

After going 3-2 in non-conference play, North Shore varsity men's basketball won in their first conference game of the year in the home opener against Sewanhaka on Jan. 2. Led by Chris Frey (22 points) and Pat Chaputian (15 points), the Vikings pulled away in the fourth quarter to win 68-49.

On Friday, January 4, behind Pat Chaputian's 14 points and 16 rebounds plus Bob Magnuson's four 3-pointers, North Shore held off an aggressive Garden City team to win 57-51. The Vikings are now 2-0 in conference play and 5-2 overall. Their next home game is at 6:30 on Friday, Jan. 11.

On Monday, Dec. 17 the Lady Vikings made up a postponed meet against Carle Place High School. Although the varsity women bowled well, they came up short to this strong team. Skyler Cullum led the team with a 400 series. Brittany Cullum, Jannina Rojas, Megan Silka and Kristin Zaleskie were the other members of the varsity squad.

Onto Wednesday, Dec. 19, the bowling teams met at Sheridan Lanes in Mineola for a position round. The vsquad was matched with Mineola while the JV team bowled against the Sewanhaka District team. The varsity team won two out of three games and total wood for an 8-3 victory. Bowling varsity were Brittany and Skyler Cullum, Jannina Rojas and Kristin Zaleskie.

On Thursday, Dec. 20, the varsity team defeated Locust Valley High School. The team was led by Skyler Cullum who had a 154 game on the way to a 426 series. Brittany Cullum, Jannina Rojas, Megan Silka and Kristin Zaleskie also bowled well for the team.

This past Thursday, the women's bowling teams played Mineola High School. The varsity team, after winning the first game and losing the second game by seven pins, lost the final game and the match. The team was led by Skyler Cullum who had a 153 game on the way to a 394 series. Brittany Cullum had a high game of 167, Megan Silka and Kristin Zaleskie also bowled well for the team.

The North Shore High School men's bowling team finds itself in second place just narrowly behind the Sewanhaka District. With just short of half the season left, the Vikings will be in a very competitive race for the Conference 2 crown. The team recently completed victories over Mineola and Locust Valley. The team was led by Taylor Ross, Kohe Brooks-Burke, Steve Cottell, Troy Kreiner, and DJ More. North Shore's junior varsity team is undefeated this season as they look to capture another Conference title.

This year the North Shore wrestling team has moved up a division. There

are eight returning all-conference wrestlers: Craig DeMeo, Kevin Koczen, Joe DeNovellis, Paul Falione, Robert Grabher, Eric Gruebel, Peter Griffiths and Paul Wefer. Seniors Peter Blackburn, Jarred Norris and Glen Gerbush also will have a big impact on the varsity lineup. Tommy Destio, Jake Hojnowski, Pierce Janssen, Charlie Wahler, Nick Cortisidis, John Rossi, Dean Schmuley, and Steven Ragusa are underclassman wrestling at the varsity level and are beating some really tough competition. Seventh-grader Danny Grabher is 4-2 on the varsity. This is the first time that North Shore has a seventh-grader wrestling on varsity.

The wrestling team's first competition was at Glen Cove. The team went 46 wins and only 5 losses! The following week MacArthur beat North Shore 33-30, the only loss of the day for North Shore High School. The team finished 5-1 for the day beating Wantagh, Great Neck South, Valley Stream North, and Massapequa.

The North Shore wrestling team had an outstanding tournament at Glen Cove High School over the holiday break. Out of nine teams North Shore finished first in the tournament beating some tough teams like Mepham and Garden City. The first place finish was for the first time ever in North Shore history.

Rankings for the North Shore wrestlers: Danny Grabher- 2nd place; Charlie Wahler- 4th place; Eric Gruebel- 1st place (also voted Outstanding Wrestler); Dean Shmuely- 2nd place; Paul Faglione- 6th place; Pierce Janssen- 2nd place; Paul Wefer- 4th place; Peter Blackburn- 2nd place; Rob Grabher- 3rd place; Peter Griffiths- 3rd place; Glen Gerbush- 5th place; Joe DeNovellis- 1st place.

All North Shore Wrestling teams are invited to the First Wrestling Alumni Night at North Shore High School. The alumni introductions will take place at the Jan. 18 match against Wheatley.
