Obituaries

Lawrence James Banks, a Glen Cove resident who was a long standing member of the New York University Alumni Association Board and a retired stock investment broker for Prudential Securities, died on Jan. 9, 2008. He was 77. Arrangements and cremation were handled by Burnett's Funeral Home, Hempstead. Interment Long Island National Cemetery.

Mr. Banks grew up in Lacrosse, FL, and attended public schools in Alachua and Dade counties. In 1947, he graduated from the D. A. Dorsey Senior High School, Miami, FL, and was the class salutatorian. At the age of 18 (1948), Mr. Banks joined the U.S. Army and served for four years. He continued his military career within the Reserves, completing more than 20years, and earned the rank of Major. From 1993-1994 he was the president of the American Institute of Parliamentarians. Other affiliations include, serving as vice president, the treasurer, and a member of the board of directors for NYU'S Business College Alumni Association; the president and on the board of directors for the Touchdown Club of America, Inc., a member of the board of governors for the Brooklyn Children's Museum; chairman for the Crown Heights Board of Community Affairs; and the Kiwanis International Committee; LTC-USAR: General Staff - The PB board of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court of New York State.

An avid sportsman and fan, Lawrence spent many hours viewing and attending seasonal basketball and football games. Until his illness, he played tennis regularly with neighbors and friends.

A memorial service in celebration of Lawrence's life will be held at the All Saints Episcopal Church, 855 Middle Neck Rd., Great Neck, on Feb. 16 in the church sanctuary, beginning at noon. The Reverend Mauricio J. Wilson, Rector, will officiate.

Lawrence leaves, to mourn, his wife, Anna Jane of Glen Cove, his stepson, Derek Millner of Maryland, two sisters, Aszalee S. Tynes and Elizabeth B. Finnie of Miami, FL, brother-in law, Gene Finnie, sister-in-law, Gladys Simmons of Starke, FL, sisters-in law, Bertha Hill of New Jersey, Gladys Urquhart, Sharon Shepherd of New York, brother-in-law, James Shepherd, nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to the American Heart Association or the Diabetes Research Institute Foundation.

Ann V. Hickey (nee Butler), of Farmingdale and Coram (born and raised in Glen Cove), passed away Jan. 18, 2008. Wife of Martin "Buz". Mother of Pamela and Peter Costanzo, Thomas, Martin and Timothy and Katie. Grandmother of James, Declan, Liam, Neeve and Nora. Sister of Thomas, Joseph and the late Brendan. Arrangements were made by Arthur F. White Funeral Home. Funeral Mass was held Jan. 22 at St. Kilian RC Church with interment following at Locust Valley Cemetery. Donations in Ann's memory may be sent to Visiting Nurse Service and Hospice of Suffolk, Inc. (505 Main St. Northport, NY 11768). Louis J. Bolgosano, of Glen Cove, died on Jan. 21, 2008. Husband of Rita (Capriola). Father of Phyllis and Patricia Bolgosano, Louis Jr. Grandfather of Sarah Casey Hendrick. Brother of the late Lucy Armele. Arrangements were made by the Marcus L. Antonia Berlangieri (Giacobbe) died on Jan. 22, 2008. The end of a life well-lived, and completely, unselfishly devoted to her family. Wife of Salvatore. Mother of Giuseppe, Antonio, Rosa, Palmira and Michelle and the late Michele and Giovanni. Mother-in-law of Antonia, Felicia, Margarita, Marcelo Balbuena and Carlos Gentilcore. Abuela/nonna of 18 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren. Daughter of the late Parmina and Giovanni. Antonia is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends all over the world who loved her dearly.

Born on June 18, 1908, in Flumeri, Italy, Antonia Giacobbe married Salvatore Berlangieri in 1927 and they had seven children. She endured the hardships of raising a family on a farm during wartime with tremendous courage. Antonia and her family immigrated to Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1952, and then immigrated again to the United States in 1967. Since then, Antonia has lived in Glen Cove, and through the years has traveled all over the world to spend time with her family, who are the center of her life and brought her endless joy.

Richard William Simons, longtime resident of Bayville, died on Jan. 23, 2008 at age 89. He was a retired lieutenant of NCPD and proud WWII veteran. Husband of the late Dorothy Evelyn (nee Tilford). Father of Richard T. (Dorothy) and Judith A. Ellison (Butch). Brother of the late Mary, Charles, Irving, Andrew, twin Raymond, and James. Grandfather of Edward, Stacey, Judith, Daniel, Richard, and David. Great-grandfather of five. Arrangements were made by the Funeral Home of Dodge-Thomas, Glen Cove. Mass at St. Gertrude RC Church. Interment Bayville Cemetery. John A. Buscemi, of Glen Cove, died on Jan. 23, 2008. Son of John J. Buscemi and Elizabeth Burroughs. Brother of Michael. Grandson of Al and Betty Vehring. Spencer Michelsen, of Glen Cove and East Marion, LI, died on Jan. 24, 2008 at age 67. He was a retired sergeant with the Nassau Co. Sheriff's Dept., serving 32 years. Husband of Valerie H. Father of Scott (Victoria), Kristin (Ian Brown) and Paul (Carmina). Grandfather of Sara, Clarissa, Holly and Spencer. Brother of James (Roseanne).
