The sun was shining, flowers were blooming and Glen Covers were planting during the City's Earth Day celebration. On Saturday, April 19 dedicated residents, with shovels in hand, joined in for the planting of liriope ground cover along the north side of Forest Avenue. Preparation for this event began last month, when N&M Specialty Corp. removed asphalt from the sidewalk and replaced it with fine topsoil, which was then planted with 13 new trees of the Ginkgo and Zelkova variety. Afterward, mulch was spread the length of the site to ensure moisture and weed control.

The Glen Cove Tree Commission, in partnership with the Beautification Commission and Mayor Ralph V. Suozzi's office, sponsored this year's Glen Cove Earth Day Celebration. This year's participants included the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, teens, parents and grandparents who came out to enjoy this wonderful opportunity to contribute to the city's beautification efforts. The planting was just one step in an overall plan to improve the streetscape along the Locust Valley/Forest Avenue corridor through the addition of green space along the street and sidewalks.

The city is grateful for the contributions of the Glen Cove Shopping Center, Villagio's Pizzeria in Sea Cliff, Glen Cove Beer Distributor for the donations of bottles of water, and to all the volunteers for their service in the spirit of this year's Earth Day. All residents are encouraged to continue to do their part in keeping our community clean, green and litter free.

For a list of upcoming events that welcome both new and returning volunteers, visit the Glen Cove website at www.glencove-li.com or check the local papers. To arrange for individual cleanups throughout the month, contact Damion in Beautification at 676-5188.
