Glen Cove girls varsity lacrosse keeps moving forward. The girls have recently played four games with two wins, a tie and a loss, giving the team a strong record of 5 wins, 1 loss and 2 ties. They are well positioned at No. 4 out of the 15 schools in their conference.

The girls are led in goals by Kelsea Valance, who has 29 with 11 assists, followed by Yvonne Mennuti with 11 and 4, Robin Godfrey with 10 and 4, and Sam Basile with 9 and 5. Other key contributors have been the stellar duo in defense of Sofia Christopoulos and Megan Gardrvits, who create low percentage shots for Renee Orshan, who has been very adept in goal. Heather Artinian has shown tenacity as the go-to girl who marks the opposition's top goalscorer. Chelsee Marks has won many center draws and has played well in the midfield. The entire squad has contributed to the success of the team, and it is the team camaraderie that has allowed this success.

On Friday May 9, the girls will play a non-league game against Locust Valley at John Maccarone Memorial (City) Stadium at 8 p.m.

Come down and support this terrific team. The evening will feature a huge raffle; the proceeds will be split between the Andreas Christopoulos Scholarship Fund and the Girls Lacrosse Fund.

The Glen Cove varsity tennis team is still looking forward to winning its first match this year despite tying MacArthur once and losing 4-3 in the rematch. The team is also looking to revenge a tight 4-3 loss to the Valley Stream Central when they visit Glen Cove. The team is led by an outstanding trio of singles players - Kieran Basra, Carlos Palacios and Tom Jasinski. Tom is leading the team with a 4 and 1 record. On the doubles side, the third doubles team of Jason Ho and Evan Ng is leading the team with two wins. Every player on the team has worked hard to improve his skills and their efforts should be rewarded by season's end. The Glen Cove varsity golf team has completed the first half of the season. Starting the season with three very good teams, Oyster Bay, Plainview JFK, and defending champions Port Washington, was a tough beginning. As the season progressed, the team did much better and most players lowered their scores. With very close matches against East Meadow, Great Neck North and Wheatley, the team is looking forward to the second half of the season. The leading scorers for the first half of the season were sophomore Chris Haren and senior Michael Abbondondalo.

The Glen Cove boys varsity lacrosse team traveled across the border this weekend to defend its title in the Portledge Lacrosse Tournament. In the first round, the Big Red drew the Panthers, who were out to avenge their loss in last year's finals. The Big Red put together its best three quarters of lacrosse, and took a 7-6 lead going into the fourth quarter.

Tyler Ravener opened the scoring on an assist from Dougie Tripp, and Eric Tripp would put the Big Red back in the lead on a feed from Kevin Paolillo. After falling behind in the second quarter, the Big Red rallied again to tie the score before the half. Zach Rubin was credited with a goal as his feed was blocked down by the Panther goalie, and Eric Tripp would score his second of the day. Dougie Tripp would score twice in the third quarter on assists from both Eric Tripp and Kevin Paolillo. Finally Tyler would put the Big Red ahead at the end of three on his second goal.

Unfortunately for the Big Red, the game is four quarters, and a penalty-plagued fourth quarter was too much for Glen Cove's defense to handle. Playing a stellar game, defensemen George Weck, Garen Spendjian, Danny Mahoney, Phil Voegtlen, Brandon Winkler, Rafael Montes and Ryan Zupa limited the opportunities of the Panther offense. Goalie Brendan Huggins registered 12 saves, until even he had to report to the penalty box. Portledge would score off three extra-man opportunities in the fourth to take the game 12-7.

Saturday was a better day for the Big Red, as they faced Lutheran in the consolation game. With the disappointment of the first round still in mind, the Big Red would score early and often against the Crusaders. Eric Tripp opened the scoring with two goals in the first minute of play. The Big Red would go on to score 11 in the quarter and 18 for the game. Eric would lead the offensive barrage with five goals and five assists, followed by Kevin Paolillo with a career-high four goals and five assists. Doug Tripp had three goals and an assist, Tyler Ravener and Mike Pappachristou both scored two. Kevin Gardrvits had a goal and an assist, Zach Rubin added another goal, and Danny Mahoney had an assist from his defensive position. Scott Michaleas stopped seven shots in the goal.

Glen Cove's most recent conference meet, rescheduled from April 1, was held at Island Trees on Friday, April 18. In this meet, Glen Cove competed against Island Trees, Wantagh and West Hempstead. Despite being outnumbered and handicapped by team injuries, Glen Cove had many individual accomplishments. Kaliym Beatty had first-place finishes in the 100 meter (11.3) and the long jump (19'11-1/2"); Mike Mackney took second in the 400 meter (53.8); and Danny Belfiore took second in the discus throw (116'8"). The 4 x 100 relay team with Isiah Jones, Mike Mackney, Steven Drayton and Kaliym Beatty placed second with a time of 48.6 seconds.

The next conference meet is April 29 at Floral Park.
