On Friday, May 9 at 8 p.m, the Big Red girls varsity lacrosse team will be playing their Senior Game against Locust Valley at John Maccarone Memorial (City) Stadium and the team invites the community to join them in honoring the senior players. The team has two seniors this year, Tricia Mele (captain) and Samantha Simon. Both girls are terrific contributors to the team and the program.

At the game, the team will be having a huge raffle, the proceeds of which will go to the Andreas Christopoulos Scholarship Fund (Andreas played for the Glen Cove boys varsity) and the Girls Lacrosse Fund.

Currently, the team has a record of 6 wins, 2 ties and 2 losses.

The Glen Cove High School boys track and field team came in with an impressive second place finish at the April 29 conference meet. Hosted by Floral Park, the meet also included Great Neck North and Clarke high schools.

Glen Cove had four first-place finishes, one second-place finish and five third-place finishes. Sophomore Alex Sfoggia was Glen Cove's high point scorer with two first-place finishes (one for the mile run with a time of 5:02.2 and the other for the 800-meter race with a time of 2:17.6). Dominick Brasiello, also a sophomore, placed first in the 3200 meter race with a time of 11:40.7. Glen Cove garnered additional points thanks to third place finishes by Anthony Passalacqua for the intermediate hurdles (68.0), Mike DiLeo for the 400-meter race (54.5), Hector Paez for the high hurdles (18.0) and Alex Bogdanich for the 3200-meter race (13:12.1). Senior Johnson Ho scored a respectable fourth in the 400-meter race (57.3).

The field competitors accumulated points for Glen Cove as they continue to improve this season. Danny Belfiore hurled the discus 120.7 feet (a personal best) for a first place finish and placed second in the shot put with a throw of 38-1/2 feet. Chris Palmisano captured third in the discus (90.9-1/2 feet) and fourth in the shot put (36'10.5"). George Metskas scored fourth in the discus (85'6").

The relay teams added additional points to Glen Cove's totals. The 4 x 800 (2 miles) relay team (Hector Paez, Alex Sfoggia, Dom Brasiello and Alex Bogdanich) took second while the 4 x 100 (400 meters) relay team (Stephen Suozzi, Anthony Passalacqua, Crisrino Chavez and Vinny Ienopoli) took third.

The Glen Cove boys lacrosse team shook off the "SAT malaise" to beat Great Neck North on Saturday by a score of 10-7. Goaltender Brendan Huggins and the defense of Garen Spendjian, Danny Mahoney, Brandon Winkler, George Weck, Phil Voegtlen, Rafael Montes and Harrison Balisky kept the Big Red in the game during the first half. Huggins would register six saves in the half before giving way to "the closer" Scott Michaleas in the second half.

Offensively, Tyler Ravener's two goals and Dougie Tripp's one goal kept the Big Red close, but the team trailed 5-3 at the half. The team took the field with a new vigor in the second half, and as the third quarter came to an end, the game was tied 6-6. Eric Tripp scored two goals and Mike Pappachristou added one for the Big Red.

In the fourth, Kevin Paolillo put the Big Red out in front 7-6, but the Blazers would storm right back to tie the game again. Zach Rubin beat the defense and found a wide-open Tyler Ravener for Tyler's third goal and an 8-7 GC lead. Ryan Zupa would add a goal, and Eric Tripp would finish out the scoring in the closing seconds of the game.
