The Glen Cove Youth Bureau and the Glen Cove Senior Center announced the completion of an intergenerational mural called Where People Meet. The mural has been an ongoing project and is a part of the Glen Cove After 3 Program, supported by the 21st Century Grant.
Linda Emmerich, the muralist guiding this effort, has worked with all of the senior and youth volunteers in creating a beautiful piece of art that adorns the walls of the Senior Center. The idea for the final painting was the result of a group effort.
Once Ms. Emmerich had created a design that incorporated everyone's suggestions, she spent many sessions preparing the participants with basic painting skills. The volunteers practiced on paper and boards, learning how to paint the branches and flower petals, sponge the bushes, and create strokes that would become the water, rocks and grass.
During each painting session, a new piece of the mural was made a reality. Within a few weeks the wall began to take shape as a beautiful painting. The final product is over 30 feet in length and has become the talk of the Senior Center, as all who see it say they are impressed by its peaceful beauty.
The youth and seniors said they enjoyed working together on this project. The Glen Cove After 3 Program and all of the mural volunteers expressed gratitude to the F.M. Brush Company for their generous donation of paint brushes.
