While many teens are enjoying the long, lazy days of summer, the Glen Cove Youth Bureau Summer Youth employees are hard at work. These diligent individuals may be seen around town, painting, cleaning and weeding as part of an annual program which prepares local youth to become responsible employees by offering them career oriented training and skills.
The youth workers have become engaged in a number of projects throughout the community. Groups have been working with the Beautification Commission to clean and weed near St. Rocco’s Church in preparation for their annual feast. On Fridays they have worked at Garvies Point before helping to set up for the weekly Downtown Sounds Concert Series.
In addition to these projects, the Summer Youth Employment Program has placed individual participants with several city agencies and community organizations. Participating agencies include the Building and Grounds Department, the Parks and Recreation Department, the Senior Center and Adult Day Care Program, the Glen Cove Boys & Girls Club, the Glen Cove Chamber of Commerce, the Melillo Center and SCO Family of Services.
Mayor Suozzi said, “I am proud of these individuals who are working so hard on projects that will benefit our community. They are certainly role models to all of our youth and I hope that they will take the lessons they learn in this program and apply them to their future careers.”
