Rebuilding In Morgan Park

Historic Glen Cove gazebo comes back to life

On Wednesday, Dec. 5, the roof was raised on the Morgan Park gazebo, completing the second phase of the project to rebuild the city’s landmark that was destroyed last summer. The roof was attached to the new steel columns that were put in place in late November.

The city is using the original blueprints to rebuild the gazebo, originally erected in 1932. The only difference between the new structure and the original is the steel supports, which should prevent a future collapse.

The entire structure came down during a July 18 thunderstorm as a result of a “microburst,” leaving the park bare of its 80-year-old monument and the community devoid of its own piece of personal history. At the time, Mayor Ralph V. Suozzi assured the people of Glen Cove that the structure would be rebuilt, and donations began arriving almost immediately to help with the process. The project comes with an estimated cost of $70,700, though with the $10,000 deductible that the city is responsible for, plus about $5,000 in donations, the city may be saved the burden of payment.

The crew is working to get the structure completed as soon as possible, weather permitting, and at this point, everything except for the painting and plastering is expected to be completed by Christmas.
