It was Sunday afternoon, June 9, in Glen Cove. St. Rocco’s Parish Hall was filled with round tables adorned in cotton floral tablecloths. Ladies in hats, some elegant, some quirky, sat and sipped tea from China tea cups. All had come out for the Third Annual Mad Hatter’s Tea Party held by the Glen Cove Hospital Auxiliary.
An assortment of homemade sandwiches and goodies were graciously served by the Boy Scouts of Locust Valley Troop 962 who volunteered their time under the leadership of their Scoutmaster Charlie Ruhl. Women from St. Rocco’s Parish worked tirelessly the kitchen to keep the tea water boiling. Auxiliary members sold raffle tickets and mingled through the crowd assuring that everyone was having a great time.
The highlight of the afternoon was the Parade of Hats when the ladies strolled the perimeter of the hall to the strains of “Hello Dolly.” Prizes were awarded for the silliest hat, the prettiest hat and the most creative hat.
Julie Albin, fundraising chairperson, stated that “proceeds from the two previous teas went for breast cancer research. This time the proceeds will be used to refurbish the hospital chapel.”
Added Phyllis Sczesnak, auxiliary president, “We plan to repaint and lighten the chapel up. We hope to make it a more welcoming place for the patrons of the hospital.”
The auxiliary will next be hosting a restaurant and wine tasting event at the Glen Cove Mansion on July 9 to benefit the new adult brain injury rehabilitation unit that opened at the hospital in March. In addition to raising needed funds for hospital programs, auxiliary members also provide many services that help make a patient’s hospital stay more pleasant including running the gift shop or delivering mail and flowers. Volunteers also provide much needed clerical support.
