Glen Cove Celebrates Independence Day

The Fourth of July festivities began bright and early on a hot, humid morning in Glen Cove with a well-attended bicycle parade for the kids, followed by a ribbon cutting for the renovated gazebo in Morgan Park in the afternoon, and culminating in music and a fireworks celebration in the evening.

A few hundred children and their families rode their bikes and scooters from Finley Middle School to Glen Cove Village Square, where refreshments were served and songs were sung.  Mayor Ralph V. Suozzi gave some background on the origins of the bike parade, stating that it was started years ago by Cheryl Carmody, who would rally a couple dozen kids to bike through the neighborhood. Six years ago, the City of Glen Cove began organizing the parade on a larger scale, giving an opportunity for the children to show their American pride and also learn about bike safety.

Mayor Suozzi recognized those who donated funds for the gazebo reconstruction, including two young children, as well as the architect.
