Glen Cove High School Choral Director Edward Norris announced that the Glen Cove High School Select Chorale has been chosen to perform at the White House on Friday, Dec. 13. The group will be singing a five-hour set before many national dignitaries, including U.S. Senators, members of the House of Representatives and quite possibly the President.
Additionally, the group will carol throughout Washington D.C., making stops at the National Christmas Tree as well as the Vietnam, Martin Luther King Jr. and Lincoln memorials and possibly the Capitol Building.
According to Mr. Norris, hundreds of groups from throughout the United States apply to play the White House every year and it is a tremendous honor to be chosen. The GCHS Select Chorale is the only group from the area to perform there this year and is among a handful of choirs comprising approximately 50 acts from across the country, including string quartets, harpists, and soloists.
Under the direction of Mr. Norris, the GCHS Select Choir has performed at many prestigious venues including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, LeFrak Concert Hall (Queens College), the United Nations Building, Citi Field and Shea Stadium. Last year they were one of only 10 choirs in the region invited to participate in the Westminster Choir College Invitational Choral Festival. The group has also traveled to festivals in Florida, Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania.
Norris thanks Glen Cove Mayor Ralph Suozzi and Congressman Steve Israel for helping to make this trip a reality.
